A Taste of Little Italy

Saturday, June 19th, 2010 at 1:30 am

Went to “A Taste of Little Italy” Friday afternoon/evening. Had some nice small dishes, tried new things, listened to some music and a happy atmosphere, it was nice. Z and I were on our feet for a good 3-4 hours…it was painful. Here are some of the things we tried…

Lamb skewers. Man…these were SOOOOooo good. We waited in line for like, 10 minutes…I wish we bought 9 instead of 3. My favorite item there. $4.00 for 3.

Some nice Ribs and coleslaw? The sauce on the ribs was a bit hot for me. $5.

Some kind of dessert…the filling isn’t whipped cream or ice cream…I dunno what it was..but it had raisins in it. $2.50

Popcorn. Cuz I like popcorn. $1.

Mini Ice Creams. Cookies and cream flavour, $1 each.

We also got some lemonade, penne pasta ($5). Spring Rolls.

I got this cardboard bus from the TTC booth. I had 2 minutes of fun folding the bus and 3 minutes of fun doing the Photoshop.

True Blood

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 at 1:06 am

So, I’ve been catching up on True Blood lately (after catching up on House, Breaking Bad and Burn Notice). I’m at the start of season 3 as I write this…only 6 minutes in. I’ll continue to watch after I finish this post.

Season 1 was pretty interesting…the whole thing kind of a mystery. I wasn’t a fan of the killer though, I don’t really like when the killer is the secondary cast and there are no leads to them. What’s the point in trying to figure it out. I know they tried to make it look like Sam…I guess that woulda been too obvious. But you know…he’s a shape shifter…so that was unexpected (obviously!).

I thought season 2 was better…I really liked the Jason Stackhouse and the Fellowship of the Sun storyline…and how that merged with Sookie’s storyline at one point which led to the arrival of one of my favorite characters of the series thus far, Godric. While he only existed for a couple episodes, I loved the fact that he looked young but conveyed such an overwhelming presence and power. I really liked that Eric, who (looked) much older and larger, was his loyal subordinate.

The whole Maryann Forrester storyline was….I dunno, I thought it should have been secondary to the other stuff. Now I know what my co-workers meant when they said season 2 is like an orgy or a pr0no. Honestly, that pretty much describes some scenes. Still, I thought most of that storyline was rather weak and stupid.

I guess I enjoy the vampires and the vampire culture they’ve established over the course of their existence more than anything else. I like how they make references to humans being impatient, possibly because their lifespan is so insignificantly short. It kinda makes me wonder why there’s so much drama with the vampires. If you have eternity…wouldn’t you be ultra lazy? “I don’t feel like reading this book right now, I’ll read it next decade”. Anyways, I really enjoy seeing other vampires…The Magister, Godric, Sophie-Anne (the vampire queen of Louisiana). I find them, and the hierarchy interesting. I dislike the term “sheriff” though, makes me think about western. And I am not a fan of westerns.

While True Blood is generally about vampires, it’s more accurate to say that it focuses on a supernatural world. There are vampires, shape-shifters, telepaths, strange old horny gods…it’s not at all just about vampires.

I gotta say, I’m totally not a fan of Bill Compton. I know he’s dead but his skin is always strangely pale and his skin looks ultra old. You can be pale and still look kool (see: Godric, Eric)…and not old and weak.

Music’s interesting…the intro song has grown on me. Kind of sick of that violin solo whenever there’s a vampire deal going on.

Anyways…back to season 3. This show is good…it got better. It’s still no Breaking Bad tho :D I wonder what I should watch next…

Caprica
Modern Family
Supernatural
Lost
Fringe
24
Top Gear
Deadliest Warrior
Wolverine & the X-Men
Chuck
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Operation Repo
Nip/Tuck

Suggestions? I’m leaning towards Modern Family and Caprica….

Breaking Bad – Best. Show. Ever.

Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

No wonder it got nominated for all those emmys.

Seriously, Breaking Bad is easily the best show I’m watching right now.

Pure gold…incredibly dramatic…intelligent, unpredictable.

I can’t stress enough that you should watch this if you aren’t already

Catalyst Theatre’s Frankenstein – Review

The Canadian Stage Company
Bluma Appel Theatre
May 3, 2010-May 29, 2010 – Mon to Sat 8pm, Wed 1:30pm, Sat 2pm,

Z and I went to this play yesterday night. We got some (free) tickets courtesy of my co-worker, C. Thanks C! The play was great.

*Spoiler Alerts*
Much like Wicked, when the play started, I thought to myself “argh, this is gonna be a looooong play…”. The play had to win me over….and it did. Immediately after it began…surprise surprise, they started to sing. Yes, this play was a musical. But the music was great, the actor’s voices superb.

The play was eerily creepy…it was very Tim Burtoneque…the makeup, the scenery…it totally reminded me of like, a real life Nightmare before Christmas.

The actors also did this kinda….Joker from the Dark Knight paint to the eyes.

There were only 8 actors and actresses for 2 hours….it was crazy tho, they way they rotate and handle everything, I thought there was like, 20. Everything was so efficiently done!

Anyways, it was definitely worth watching!

Sadly, today is the last day this play is performing :( So odds are, you won’t be able to watch this…

/felt like part of high society for a moment

Hikaru no Go, Initial D, Gundam Seed or Get Backers?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010 at 11:45 am

I would say those are my favorite animes of all time…they’re all different…and I love them for different reasons.
I’ve watched all of them multiple times..I would say I’ve watched each series at least 3 times each but I’ve watched the episodes I like, the non filler ones, probably over 20 times.

I think out of all of them, Hikaru no Go might be my favorite…there are so many great moments in it…moments that bring a lot of emotion…moments when I feel how epic the story is.

Initial D is great, it’s a typical underdog story except there are 2 parts to the underdog and the opponent: the driver and the car. The car is the underdog…and you think the driver and car are the underdog together because no driver can outperform the capabilities of the car..and Takumi, the main character, is no exception. He does however, maximize the potential of the old car…and that’s where the beauty of the series lies.

Gundam Seed is a great fish out of water story…the main character placed in a world he’s unfamiliar with and doesn’t like…but does what he does for the survival of himself and those he cares about. It’s a great story about characters and doing what is right as opposed to what you’re told to do/what you think you’re supposed to do. The mechs are kool but I really like Gundam Seed for the characters.

Get Backers is enjoyable because it’s fun…it’s a very fun series, great characters…I would say one of the main characters, Midou Ban, might be my favorite anime character of all time. He’s a lot like House…arrogant, cocky, egotistical…but rightly so, he’s highly intelligent and probably superior to everyone else in the series. If I could be anyone…I’d be Midou Ban.

Hikaru no Go…it’s a story about characters but also very plot driven as well…combining the two to create an epic journey. I would say in all 4 series, there are moments when I also tear up because of how good the moment in the series is…like, I FEEL it. These moments…they’re rare. Initial D and Get Backers both have a few….Gundam Seed has a few more but Hikaru no Go, for me, is filled with them. I think it might just be do to rewatching the series so many times that I really FEEL everything, like it’s more real to me. I’m emotionally attached to a few characters, specifically one…that…ah…I can’t talk about it! I don’t think you can really do a series justice by only watching it once. There are so many things that you miss or deem unimportant at the time of watching it because it is. But when you rewatch it, characters that get slight mentions to early on, foreshadowing, symbolism…they all make a whole lot more sense the second time around. That’s when you start feeling how epic the story is.

I’m rewatching Hikaru no Go again and wanted to write a little about it. All of the above are great animes. Gundam Seed and Hikaru no Go have a steady pace…Initial D has an interchanging slow/fast pace throughout the series…Get Backers has some filler eps (about….13/49 of them?). Overall they’re much better than say, Death Note, which was great but left me disappointed after 25…and even a little disappointed after 16 or so, when Kira lost his memory. Naruto and Bleach are just too damn long…the stories and episodes are inconsistently good and also paced very slowly at least compared to the manga. I really like Prince of Tennis but it was very…shallow. Not really deep at all, there isn’t much character development despite a lot of character interaction. Monster is great, a little slow and dark..I think you have to be in a certain mood or a certain type of person to enjoy that.

Anyways…just wanted to write about HnG while I’m watching it. I hope you try it out! :)

Oh oh ! Also, I really like how the character in Hikaru no Go visually evolves over the course of the series. Visually, he gets very slightly older each episode, you don’t even notice the difference as you’re watching it. Then, you compare how he looked in episode 1, 30, 50, 75….and they’re all very different. But you don’t notice that as you watch…it’s done very gradually. What other animes have that type of gradual growth? Initial D, Gundam Seed, Get Backers certainly doN’T. It’s that level of attention to detail…that makes this journey epic!
