Dexter S05E01

***Spoiler Alert RE: Dexter S05 E01***

I’m feeling completely underwhelmed by this episode. I can’t seem to wrap my head around Dexter’s character and thoughts…

He’s spent his entire life trying to learn emotion…for someone as intelligent as him, someone as careful, someone who practices emotion his entire life, I can’t seem to figure out why Dexter‘s acting (not Michael Hall) is so bad. Learn how to cry Dex, it’ll come in handy some day (like this episode).

I thought the Mickey Mouse hat was an interesting touch (while Dexter was breaking the news to Rita’s family). Throughout the beginning, I’m wondering exactly how everyone is gonna react to the news and when I see it, they throw in this completely ridiculous hat. I was expecting it to be…dramatic. But instead, I was thinking “WTF, he looks ridiculous with that hat on”.

I still couldn’t wrap my head around Dexter’s lack of fake emotion in this episode. If I were a cold, emotionless….uhh, let’s say vigilante because I’d rather not call myself a killer, even hypothetically…I’d totally know when to pour on the fake emotion. The ONLY reason why I can see him not faking emotion is if he doesn’t care, if he’s gonna drop his life and go elsewhere. Which is where they took the ep, so it sort of made sense. And then he came back…so he should have still put on a better acting job. Contingency plan much Dexter?

Overall, I was disappointed with this episode. Again, it left me underwhelmed. The eulogy at the end was TERRIBLE….I thought after what he’d been through, showing real emotion for possibly the first time and everything, he’d have something interesting to say. But he didn’t. I feel like I’m Doakes this episode, wondering “why can’t everyone else see there’s something majorly wrong with this guy?”.

Isn’t it going to be suspicious that most of his stuff burned down? Where was he keeping that stuff anyways?

I hope, starting next week, they really begin to take this season in a direction. Who’s the antagonist? What’s the twist? There are only 12 episodes left, this one was wasted.

Boourns.

Hell’s Kitchen S07 E01 – S07 E06

Spoiler Alert – Read if you’re caught up to episode 6

Man…Red is absolutely horrible. Scott is just terrible…the most terrible cook…with the most oblivious head and mouth. Just terrible…but he thinks he’s good >_< it’s so frustrating to watch. Episode 6 was the first episode were the sous chefs, Scott and Andi (!pretty!) took over a side of the kitchen. Man, I wish I was served food by those 2. They’re both so high in skill…just the 2 of them can run a kitchen and do it perfectly. Their food looked awesome. Thankfully, Maria the retard is gone. Chef: “Why’s she so weird?” I lol’d. I honestly hated watching her…like, my blood would boil when I’d see her face, facial reactions, the way she carried herself…argh. Andrew…glad he walked out on the second episode. He freaked me out…he was like, animal killer. And he enjoyed it. He enjoyed butchering his animals…eating stuff raw. Freak. Social outcast and psychotic. I like Ben and Ed….I think they show potential. Ed only did well in that first, 1 episode…but he hasn’t screwed up since then. He does have a deer in the headlights look whenever he’s on the spot…i don’t like that. Like everything’s a surprise. Italian guy (Salvatore?) is funny but unfortunately, simply too stupid. Hard to say for Jay…and Holli….they’re still a bit of a mystery. Gotta say, I’m crushing on Holli…she reminds me kinda of Robin Scherbatsky. I liked when she had to play waitress and was dressed in that suit. Hawt! And then we learned Salvatore was an idiot…and later, that he never went to school. Kinda sad :'( But that’s what he gets for being a “man whore”. Siobahn’s not gonna last, Fran’s not gonna last (Chef Ramsey likes young people…he likes to see growth). My prediction of final 5: Ed, Ben, Autumn, Jay, Holli My prediction of final 3: Ed, Ben…and….Autumn. /probably awesome at cooking wellington just from the number of them I’ve seen…i can figure out raw by touching! touch the food, touch touch!

True Blood

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 at 1:06 am

So, I’ve been catching up on True Blood lately (after catching up on House, Breaking Bad and Burn Notice). I’m at the start of season 3 as I write this…only 6 minutes in. I’ll continue to watch after I finish this post.

Season 1 was pretty interesting…the whole thing kind of a mystery. I wasn’t a fan of the killer though, I don’t really like when the killer is the secondary cast and there are no leads to them. What’s the point in trying to figure it out. I know they tried to make it look like Sam…I guess that woulda been too obvious. But you know…he’s a shape shifter…so that was unexpected (obviously!).

I thought season 2 was better…I really liked the Jason Stackhouse and the Fellowship of the Sun storyline…and how that merged with Sookie’s storyline at one point which led to the arrival of one of my favorite characters of the series thus far, Godric. While he only existed for a couple episodes, I loved the fact that he looked young but conveyed such an overwhelming presence and power. I really liked that Eric, who (looked) much older and larger, was his loyal subordinate.

The whole Maryann Forrester storyline was….I dunno, I thought it should have been secondary to the other stuff. Now I know what my co-workers meant when they said season 2 is like an orgy or a pr0no. Honestly, that pretty much describes some scenes. Still, I thought most of that storyline was rather weak and stupid.

I guess I enjoy the vampires and the vampire culture they’ve established over the course of their existence more than anything else. I like how they make references to humans being impatient, possibly because their lifespan is so insignificantly short. It kinda makes me wonder why there’s so much drama with the vampires. If you have eternity…wouldn’t you be ultra lazy? “I don’t feel like reading this book right now, I’ll read it next decade”. Anyways, I really enjoy seeing other vampires…The Magister, Godric, Sophie-Anne (the vampire queen of Louisiana). I find them, and the hierarchy interesting. I dislike the term “sheriff” though, makes me think about western. And I am not a fan of westerns.

While True Blood is generally about vampires, it’s more accurate to say that it focuses on a supernatural world. There are vampires, shape-shifters, telepaths, strange old horny gods…it’s not at all just about vampires.

I gotta say, I’m totally not a fan of Bill Compton. I know he’s dead but his skin is always strangely pale and his skin looks ultra old. You can be pale and still look kool (see: Godric, Eric)…and not old and weak.

Music’s interesting…the intro song has grown on me. Kind of sick of that violin solo whenever there’s a vampire deal going on.

Anyways…back to season 3. This show is good…it got better. It’s still no Breaking Bad tho :D I wonder what I should watch next…

Caprica
Modern Family
Supernatural
Lost
Fringe
24
Top Gear
Deadliest Warrior
Wolverine & the X-Men
Chuck
Sarah Connor Chronicles
Operation Repo
Nip/Tuck

Suggestions? I’m leaning towards Modern Family and Caprica….

Breaking Bad – Best. Show. Ever.

Monday, June 14th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

No wonder it got nominated for all those emmys.

Seriously, Breaking Bad is easily the best show I’m watching right now.

Pure gold…incredibly dramatic…intelligent, unpredictable.

I can’t stress enough that you should watch this if you aren’t already

Four comedy shows and a studio audience

Monday, April 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

The Office. The Big Bang Theory. 30 Rock. How I Met Your Mother.

Despite loving Friends and Seinfeld, I’m generally not a fan of a studio audience. There are 2 awesome shows like The Office and 30 Rock which rely on excellent writing and acting for laughter, they don’t need the support of a studio audience or laugh track. Don’t get me wrong, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory have some great writing as well, it just bothers me when the studio audience or laugh track laugh at things that aren’t funny. Like every line is a joke. I wish the producers or whomever would give the audience some credit…that we’re not all blithering idiots who laugh at anything.

I guess it’s unfair, everybody has a different sense of humor or level of intelligence…I guess they need to cater to everyone.

IMO If you want a truly funny show…I would go with 30 Rock.

The Office is hilarious as well but sometimes it’s a bit…unrealistic for a realistic show. Like, sometimes I can’t believe Michael Scott is THAT stupid…sometimes the show is just about me nodding my head no out of disappointment, anger and frustration.

How I Met Your Mother has got some of the most creative writing I’ve seen, they use their “I’m telling a story, as I remember it” VERY well. The show has some over the top sillyness and fun from Barney Stinson…but Lily is flat. Her character is weak, her acting is weak. Having such a significant portion of weakness from the main cast really hurts the show, despite how awesome Barney Stinson is. No amount of awesome Barney Stinson can carry Lily.

Big Bang Theory is…well, it’s catered specifically to people like me. The jokes are nerdy, scientific, mathematical, psychological, intelligent. I’m their target audience. But the jokes in there are simply…too intelligent or specifically nerdy for the average person. Which is why I can’t stand the laugh track for their show…as if the general audience could get all that stuff. Frankly, they can’t. I can think of so many examples where a lot of people laugh but I can only think of maybe 1/20 people IRL who would get said joke. If that. I mean, I get that a show like that NEEDS a laugh track…without one, it’d be pretty quiet…but I think they overuse their laugh track a bit too much.
