Notes
I was a gaming monster in the last 2 weeks. Beat 3 games and I’m working on my fourth. I think I’ll play something different after Super Mario Land 3-D Land. I still want to start/finish Majora’s Mask as it’s critically acclaimed, about as much as Ocarina of Time. That, and Metal Gear Solid 3. And Kingdom Heart and Kingdom Hearts 2. And Metal Gear Solid 4. And Batman: Arkham Asylum. And Batman: Arkham City >_< SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH so behind. I’ve also been reading a LOT of this Hikaru no Go fanfiction. It’s soooooooooooo good. Like, it really makes me feel like it’s how the original author intended the story to go. As far as I’m concerned, this actually is the continuation of the manga. I’m honestly reading it almost every chance I get. Hours a day spent reading. For the last 4 days. I love it so much, I can’t wait to rewatch Hikaru no Go…AGAIN…..after reading this. :D Will write more when I’m more done, right now I’m only 1/2 done what the author’s put out so far. I need to finish warrenshea.com like, now. Seriously, every time I have a bad day of work, I just wish this thing was done. And I haven’t had a bad day lately…but today…grrrrrrr.

New Super Mario Bros. [DS] – Review

Monday, November 14th, 2011 at 11:59 pm

I’d played this game for a few days last week…in preparation for Super Mario 3D Land [3DS] which came out yesterday. By the way, I’ve only played it a few hours and I’m on World 3 of 8 already. I’ve been told it gets pretty hard in World 8…but right now, I’m breezing through it.

Anyways, back to New Super Mario Bros.

While it came out in 2006, I’m only playing it now cuz I just got a (3)DS this year. So it’s like, 5 years old. But it’s heavily similar to the Super Mario Bros Wii….well, actually the Wii game is similar to this. I’ll say that the multiplayer aspect on the Wii makes that game a lot more fun. The power-ups in the Wii make some things easier…and harder.

GAMEPLAY: 8/10

It plays pretty much like any Mario game. I found that it’s easy to do what I want generally…with the exception of when I use 2 of the new power-ups – Mini Mushroom and Blue Turtle Shell. While you need the Mini Mushroom to get a lot of the secrets in the game, you move differently than regular Mario; there’s more airtime but you’re also super fragile which makes the power-down (see what i did there?!) pretty crappy. Again though, you need this power-up to get the secrets for some levels (never for the level itself). Some of the most difficult aspects of this game for me was staying alive with this power-up long enough to get the Special Coin I wanted. The Blue Turtle Shell is also pretty crappy because when you run fast enough, you start moving like a shell that’s been thrown. It makes for a lot of unpredictability. You could get out of it by not holding the run/action button…but for me, I ALWAYS hold that button. That’s my natural way to play, so using the Blue Turtle Shell is kinda useless for me, unless it’s in a water level.

Anyways, the gameplay is still good/fun. The Super Giant Mario Mushroom is the opposite of the Mini Mushroom – you’re invulnerable (except from falling in a hole) except you destroy any chances of getting anything special, or going anywhere special. Effectively for me, who needs to get 100%, this is the most useless power up as I’d have to re-do a level.

So what I’m getting at is that all the new power-ups in this game SUCK.

At least they improved that in Super Mario Wii – No Blue Turtle Shell, No Giant Mario…but they added a penguin suit >_< that damn penguin suit. Difficulty wise, this game is super easy. There was one level in Super Mario Bros Wii that was pretty impossible to me. Not just me, I googled it and everyone struggled in it. But for that game, that was the only really difficult level. For this game, there were no really difficult levels. Just as an FYI - let me run down my timeline for this game to you:
Nov 8: Finished Kirby Mass Attack. Play New Super Mario Bros. : Worlds 1 to 2.5
Nov 9: World 2.5 to 4. At this time, I set myself a 4 day deadline to finish the game, so I could finish it for when the new Mario came out.
Nov 10: Worlds 4 to 6.
Nov 11: Worlds 7 to 8. Finished the game with all 3 Golden Coins per level. Finished all the levels. Spent all the golden coins. 3 Stars – 100%
It only took me 4 days to completely dominate & 100% the game. No real difficulty issues. Finished the game with 2 days to spare :D

Anyways, I just wanted to say – it’s easy for an experienced Mario gamer. And while there are a lot of worlds, it’s not deathly slow like Kirby Mass Attack. It was a welcome change from that game. *Shudder*

GRAPHICS: 10/10

They’re pretty good considering their age. It still seems to me like this game recently came out, it was in the stores for free play for so long. And the Wii, with all it’s updated capabilities, looks just like it. For Nintendo DS, I’m pretty impressed. It’s no PS3 or XBOX game I mean, but for Mario, it looks great.

MUSIC AND SOUNDS: 10/10

Same ol’ music. Maybe even more familiar than before for me because I played the Wii game first. Nothing to complain about, the music is engaging, but doesn’t make you sick even though you listen to it over and over. Seriously, all the water levels like, sound the same.

FUN: 9/10

This game is fun. Way funner than Kirby. Fun enough that I could spend hours playing it. Fun enough that I could play it so much, my thumbs hurt the next day cuz of how much I played. And that happened twice >_< I knocked it 1 point off because of the damn useless power-ups. Playing with those abilities was NOT fun, only necessary.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s a fun game. There’s nothing brand new, like Mario Land 3-D [3DS]. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel so if you’re looking for something brand new, you’ll be disappointed. I think this game is better for it’s nostalgia, since having a 2-D/2.5-D Mario game hasn’t been around in a while. Super Mario World [SNES] came out in 1991. That was the game I grew up with, the one that honed my skills. Anyways….drumroll please…de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-de-capachow!

Debra Morgan

Sunday, November 13th, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Okay. This guy keeps calling me on my cell phone. Well, he’s called 4 times in the last 3 weeks. Not THAT much.

But every time he calls, the name “Morgan, Debra” shows up in my call display. For those of you that don’t know, Debra Morgan is a main character from the show Dexter. So whenever this person calls me, I sort of light up. *! That’s SO COOOOL” i think :D

Anyways, last night this dude called me at 5 AM !! WTF
Fortunately, I’d
1. Slept at 4AM that night
2. Been on call for work starting at 5AM…so when I got the call, I thought it was work.

I had been talking to Z this morning, she asked why I didn’t get mad and yell at him for calling me last night, at 5AM…and I told her: When I see Debra Morgan calling me, I get really happy. How can I yell at someone after that? :D

/just wanted to write something random

Kirby Mass Attack [DS] – Review

Saturday, November 12th, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Remember when I used to review stuff? Yeah, me neither. Regardless, I thought I’d spend a moment talking about Kirby Mass Attack for the DS. I recently finished the game after spending what seems like an eternity playing it. Not that it wasn’t fun…but I just found it long. Very long.

First off – If you haven’t seen the game or been to the website,

check it out here !!
Kirby Mass Attack

It’s so cute!! Look at all those Kirbys and Waddle Dees. WADDLE DEE EVEN THE NAME IS CUTE.

Anyways, I’m going to get right into the review. To be honest, I’ve never reviewed a game with criteria so I’m just making stuff up as I go along!

GAMEPLAY: 8/10

First – the awesome thing about this game is that it plays very uniquely. You don’t use the D-PAD or any buttons, you only use a Stylus Pen. To be honest, I think that every thing they (Nintendo) could think of to make a game use just the stylus is incorporated in this game. I can’t count the times I thought “oh wow, that’s unique!”. Basically you just use the pen and guide Kirby’s around. Here’s where it’s annoying. With 10 Kirbys taking up the screen, and not all of them moving the way you want them to, it’s pretty damn impossible for them not to get hurt during some levels. And unfortunately, to get 100%, there is a requirement that none of your Kirbys get damaged in every level. Freaking stupid. And why I won’t ever get 100%….despite finishing the game with all the special medals you collect in each level. I’m at 94%. The rest of the “achievements” that bring you to 100% are dumb to me, not worth my time/effort.

Anyways, that’s a side rant. Gameplay is original, unique, intuitive and innovative. But I’m dropping it because of it’s lack of precision around a game with 10 characters (and you need 10 characters at certain parts of the game to advance).

GRAPHICS: 8/10

It’s a DS game so they’re not fantastic. It’s cute and Kirby-like though. I don’t know what else to say…check out this image below:

MUSIC AND SOUNDS: 10/10

I love the music. And I love the cute sounds the Kirbys make. I found that while some of the music is repetitive, they use a lot of unique tracks for many of the levels. They really spent a lot of time on the music for this game and I give them kudos for that. I have the intro song stuck in my head at random parts of the day sometimes >_<

FUN: 4/10

Ouch, 4?! Are you serious?! :( So low! While the game is innovative, I found it just gets simply boring to play. Especially going for all the Gold Medals, doing level after level…and there are so many levels, and some of them take so long. Also, my pet peeve about games is doing something again because you’ve missed it (damn you scary hand in Zelda that takes you to the beginning of dungeons). Well, I guess that can be your own fault but sometimes not so if the path forks. Sometimes I’d play, 6 minute levels two or three times which is awful. Everything took so long and I was at a point midway through the game where I couldn’t play more than 2 or 3 levels at a time without falling asleep. Afterwards, I simply forced myself to play 1 or 2 levels at a time, and then put it down and do something else. By the end of the game and after long levels and battles, my stamina for this game was done.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’m not sure if I’d recommend this game. It’s fun to try. Fun to play some worlds, some uniques stages…but not the whole game. Especially if you’re a completist. I’m sitting at 94% and that really bothers me but some of the achievements are so annoying…it just doesn’t seem worth it.

My overall rating below is low for the game despite all the scores except FUN being high. But that makes sense…if the game’s not fun, why play it?

Just checking in :D

Monday, November 7th, 2011 at 11:45 pm

I filled in my old placeholder posts….sorta. The content in there is kinda dry. Is it my fault I’ve been working like crazy lately and can’t remember stuff!?

Today was a nice night for recovery. Nothing but catching up on shows and some gaming. Sure, I logged in to work but I probably didn’t have to, or shouldn’t have. But it’s been a rather relaxing night and afternoon.

I got 100% on Kirby: Return to Dreamland on the Wii. That means I can start closing that game off….focus on Kirby Mass Attack again. That is, until the new Super Mario Land in 3D on the 3DS comes out and Mario Kart 7 comes out.

I’ll write an update on my Niagara Falls trip later…or not. I don’t know yet.

Alright, still really tired….even though it’s 10:45 pm…I think now’s a good time to crash :S
