Know when to quit

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013 at 12:03 am

Was reading this post about high achievers. One of the rules I read for high achievers was knowing when to quit:

Know when to quit. Finally, high achievers are able to achieve so much because they know when to quit. They know when they need a break and they know when they need to step back for a week or two. High achievers understand that in order to continue achieving at such a high level, they need to take the time that they need to stay sane and mentally healthy.
Do not run yourself into the ground in the name of high achievement, cut yourself some slack from time to time.

I must say – I’ve really learned this in the last 2 months. That I work myself so hard on a daily basis, but I can tell when my body’s not in good shape – or rather, I feel myself getting sick. And I know to take a step back from it all…and relax. To simply rephrase the key point from above: “In order to continuously perform well, you need to know when to stop and rest”.

.

I love my job. I love working so hard. But it’s killing me….until I say stop and it’s not. And then I regroup and it’s back to working hard again. It’s a cycle…and no doubt, I’m working so hard because I love what I’m doing. Because I can’t wait to see where my leadership and team go. I don’t know specifically where, but like my life, it’s all about being pointed in the right direction. The journey is more important than the destination. The milestones achieved along the way are just as, if not more important than the end goal.

…end goal?

To quote Hikaru no Go’s Honda’s teacher – “The road of a pro is long, and on top of that, it has no goal. You study your whole life.”

I think I have to change my mentality – there is no end goal. No final destination. The path never ends…(’til you die…but even then your children continue your path, in a way…).
I don’t know what I want my team to be in 2 or 5 years. I’ve never known that of myself, how can I know that for 15 people? But as long as they’re pointed in the right direction…

Revelation: Breaking Bad

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013 at 11:25 pm

In the beginning…
Walter is the protagonist.
Jesse is the protagonist.
Hank is a side character.

By the end…I think….
Walter is the antagonist.
Jesse is the protagonist.
Hank is the protagonist!

My prediction:
Walter Jr. and Skylar come out of this innocent, and rich.
Hank or Jesse kills Walter.
Marie wears purple.

…that is all. On S03E06 right now…..cuttin through the eps like BUTTUH.

Very good long weekend….doing nothing.

Weekend
Went out to eat Saturday at the Keg and Monday at Sidecar! Very content with the delicious meals…
Spent a lot of time working this week…as per usual. But cleaned up a lot :)

Electronics
Cleaned and organized tons of my existing electronics and computer hardware. Got a whole large rubbermaid bin of this stuff including Power Supply cables, VGA cables, DVI cables, PSUs, USB cables, keyboards, mouses (mice?). Going to donate/recycle them :) Feel great getting rid of so much of my stuff. That just means more room for other stuff!

Work
Really need to start phasing out of my old life as a developer and phasing in to my new life as a manager – need to start stepping away from executing and start stepping into strategy – leading and deciding where the executers should go. It’s hard and it’s more pressure and responsibility than being a developer. Now, I’m not only responsible for my professional career, but the career of 10+ others….now that’s a lotta responsibility! So I’m trying really hard to do right by them.

Breaking Bad
Rewatching Breaking Bad starting yesterday.
I’m on Season 3 Episode 1 right now. So in two days, 20 episodes. Only…36 episodes to go Q_Q…before Sunday night. So…6 days. 6 episodes a day, is that even possible?! I have work for 4 of those days!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Still playing Animal Crossing quite a bit. It’s been a month…Getting into the Stalk Market!
I just put about 1,500,000 bells into Stalks (Turnips)….hoping to double or triple that! Z started playing too so I now have 2 games to watch for high bells, decreasing my chances for loss.
My plan is to have
1 – Basement (Basement)
1 – Living Room (1st floor)
1 – Washroom (1st floor)
1 – Mario/Game room (1st floor)
1 – Bedroom (2nd floor)

Right now, I only have 1 large living room, 1 unexpanded basement and 1 unexpanded 2nd floor.

That’s it for now! Will try to blog later!

New Computer….

Monday, July 29th, 2013 at 9:23 pm

….for my parents.

Yes, not interesting at all.

So I just bought a parts for a new computer.
Motherboard
RAM
CPU
Optical Drive

That’s it. Hard drive is still good (it’s a SATA) but unfortunately, had to get a new SATA optical drive as the motherboard I got doesn’t have IDE. My, how times change.
It kinda sucks because I’ve gone quite a few optical drives but none of them will work with any new computer.

My parents now have a computer better than my own – It’s still Dual Core but it’s 3.4 Ghz (mine is a mere 2.4 Ghz).
Their motherboard uses DDR3 RAM (my uses DDR2) though they’re still on XP so I don’t think all the RAM is being properly allocated/used.

I decided not to get a new computer for a while – I’ll get it when mine breaks….not sure what would have to break though. My HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is new, it’s an SSD (Solid State Drive). The PSU’s (Power Supply Unit?) good and if that broke, wouldn’t warrant a new computer. No, the only way for me to get a new computer would be if my Motherboard or CPU (Central Processing Unit) fried or something. Or maybe my Video Card.

Sadly though, I don’t need a new computer and probably won’t get one for the foreseeable future. Patience is a virtue! If I’m patient, I will be rewarded with an awesome-er computer in the future, that is cheaper than what I would spend now.

I’m just killing time on my parent’s computer…waiting it to defrag of all things! When was the last time I defragged a HD?! Probably…when I was using XP!

That’s it for now…will blog more when I get my regular computer hooked up.

My weekend…

Sunday, July 14th, 2013 at 2:07 am

…has not been nearly as relaxing as I would have liked so far.

Went karaoking with friends on Friday night at 9pm. Lasted til about 3:30am. Slept at 4ish only to wake up at 10:30am to get ready and take care of my niece and nephew.
Did so this Saturday (today). Got McDonalds for lunch (more on that later), watched Rise of the Guardians and Wreck-it-Ralph with them while playing with my old Legos from my high school days. Then went to get Froyo at Yoyos, played some Wii (Kirby: Return to Dreamland and Mario Kart Wii) and got some Pizzaiolo for dinner. Drove them back to their parents home, came back and cleaned up. And now it’s 2am. And I’m freaking exhausted.

FYI – At McDonalds, when throwing my garbage away, I accidentally threw my car keys away into the McDonalds garbage can. Ugh. I only noticed minutes later, when I got to my car and couldn’t find my keys. I went back to the garbage and peered in a bit. Fortunately, when I threw stuff away, the garbage was already pretty full. Anyways, looked into the garbage for my keys, moved a couple of boxes and papers (ew!) and saw them :S Grabbed them…and was extraordinarily happy and felt fortunate to find them without having to go garbage rummaging. “Lucky”, I thought. Generally, I’m pretty careful with stuff but I was a bit frazzeled, taking care of the kids. It’s…not easy. And I thought being a manager was tough, watching over kids is….much more nerve racking.

Plan to work tomorrow, all day. Have a massage at 3:15pm tomorrow….excited for that cuz I’ve been brutally busy lately. I need to relax.

That’s it for now. Also, still playing some Animal Crossing but damn, I realize some people (as I visit their homes) are WAY ahead of me. It’s scary how much they have. Didn’t really realize the depth of this game. People are HARDCORE.

Anyways, enough outta me. 2am and I feel like it’s 6am. Gnite!
