Tutorial: This ain’t yo mom’s absolute pathing…sup?!

Monday, April 9th, 2012 at 4:39 pm

I should probably have a better title name considering what this tutorial is supposed to accomplish.

So as most of you hopefully know, putting a leading slash in a path refers to a root directory.

Example:
If the domain is http://www.worldofwarren.com/ and you link to
<a href=”/images/”>images</a>,
it will link to http://www.worldofwarren.com/images/

So what happens if you put 2 leading slashes in a path?
NOTHING LIKE THE ABOVE.

Purpose of this tutorial
To display the practical use of a URL with a leading double slash (//) in a path.
A URL with a double slash inherits the current protocol.

What you need to know/have
Basic HTML

Procedure
If you’re on an HTTP site (http://www.URL.com/) and you have

<img src=”//www.URL.com/images/logo.gif” alt=”” />,

then the image will reference http://www.URL.com/images/logo.gif

If you’re on an HTTPS site (https://www.URL.com/) and you have

<img src=”//www.URL.com/images/logo.gif” alt=”” />,

then the image will reference https://www.URL.com/images/logo.gif

Same code. But based on current protocal (HTTP or HTTPS), different results.

My ramblings
The // takes whatever protocol (HTTP or HTTPS) that the webpage is currently using and applies the referenced item to that. It’s awesome if you’re building secure and non-secure pages.

You wouldn’t need to use this on files that are within the same domain. In this case, relative pathing is probably better. But sometimes you link to files outside your domain.

For example, Google’s jQuery or SWFObject library.

Anyways, hope you learned something. I taught a lot of people this since learning it earlier this year, it’s awesome and so useful!

People are always asking “This form is supposed to be secure, but IE is prompting me with an alert that there are unsecure elements. PLZ FIX” and then you can be like “YO I JUST APPLY THE LEADING DOUBLE SLASH…sup?!”

I realized why I haven’t read anything in a while.

It’s simply that the last book I was reading didn’t interest me. But I want to finish it. I NEED to finish it. It’s part of my personality. Part of my OCD.
That book is currently the Steve Jobs book. I’m 30-60 pages in and definitely not into it. I don’t want to start reading it again. I also don’t want to start reading anything different until I finish that book. Sigh, the problems of being a completest.

Anyways.

I have decided to stop reading Steve Jobs for the near future and focus reading other things. Currently, I have this short book called

The Art of Racing in the Rain.

My (ex-)co-worker was reading it and he mentioned it was quite a sad book. I’m always up for a little emotion, I love media that can make me think, or make me sad.
Happy is easy. I can find lots of things to make me happy.
Anger is easy. I can find soooo many things that piss me off.
But something that will make me really think can be difficult to find.
And while I’m fairly emotional regarding sadness and depression in media, I will enjoy something that will make me feel those things. I guess I can’t complain, but I don’t feel them enough and it’s good to have a nice balance.

You can’t feel true happiness without having felt sadness for without sadness, your happiness would have nothing to be compared with and thus, be the default state.

I think next on my list after that would be the Hunger Games books, followed finally by the Game of Thrones books. I’m not sure if I can actually read all this as reading isn’t something I generally do. But I’ll see where these novels take me.

A common goal. A common enemy.

While I definitely admit that many people can bond over a number of things, I feel that nothing can make people bond like a common goal. Or a common enemy.

Like any school project, a group will work together best if they share a common goal. If a member doesn’t really share it or won’t work towards it, it’s likely that person will not contribute as much as someone else on the team that will.

And I would consider “finding a significant other to spend the rest of your life with” to be a common goal, which I believe might partially explain why people stay in relationships. And why some relationships don’t last (difference in desire for kids for example, difference in desire for professional advancement, difference in sexual desire, etc…).

I’ve thought that generally, war is like this. That a nation would come together to fight another nation, but if there was no other nation to fight, they would simply fight among themselves. All our national squabbles would be pretty trivial is say, we were at war with another nation (just my opinion). While humanity might fight among itself given no other opponent, I believe we would band together if say, there were a common global threat. Or if we were on the verge of extinction.

If a meteor were to come towards earth, the world (I would hope) would put aside all their difference and all work on a, or many, solutions to save our race.
If the zombie apocalypse were to occur, humanity would help each other out and kill the zombies.
Even in Hunger Games or Battle Royale, in a “1 survivor” type game, there are alliances. Common goals. And the people band together…until their goal is achieved, and then they’re on their own.

If I were ever to try to lead a group of people, I would try to think of a common goal or enemy. For example, if I were manager of a design and development team, I would have a mandate and hire people who believe and uphold that mandate. And fire people who do not. But that’s just me. People will work best if they’re self motivated…

Just some random thoughts.

The Hunger Games…left me HUNGRY for moar.

C WAT I DID THAR?

Saw Hunger Games tonight. I guess I had high expectation due to word of mouth and ratings. However, I was pretty disappointed with the movie. It was like Battle Royale for teenage girls.

The Hunger Games, compared to Battle Royale was:
Less of a psychological thriller. Less bloody. Less intense. Less disturbing. Less buildup/rising action.
More funny. More cheesy. More colorful.

That said, both films are incredibly similar in premise however, they are executed quite differently.

I can’t say Battle Royale didn’t have plot holes (I don’t remember it that well) but there were definitely some issues with Hunger Games.
I purchased the Battle Royale Blu Ray and will definitely watch it the next time Z’s not around (definitely not her type of movie). Kinda excited now to compare the two.

Just noticed: weird how
Rotten Tomatoes rates Battle Royale 85% and The Hunger Games 85%
IMDB rates Battle Royale: 7.8 and The Hunger Games 7.7

So similar. Currently, Battle Royale has a slight edge and I hope it stays that way. Although Battle Royale is somewhat dated in comparison, it was definitely more true to how I believe a similar situation might play out. Although, there are some pretty unbelievable psychos in Battle Royale…which made the movie cool but a tad more unrealistic.

Anyways. I won’t be buying this DVD. I’m still considering reading the book as it’s bound to be better…I would love to read about the things I didn’t get…
