Source Control? No thanks.

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012 at 11:59 pm

I prefer to live life DANGEROUSLY.

I’ve never been a fan of source control, checking things in and out, locked files, merging files, etc. I always found it more tedious than beneficial. After all, I make my own backups during project milestones. And I was one of the 5 or so developers that didn’t properly use Source Control at my work when they tried to implement it, and if one person doesn’t use it, the whole thing crashes down. LOL so basically, I ruined it for everyone else /flex. And no, I don’t feel bad, our team still got along great without it.

I know I’m playing devil’s advocate here. I know Source Control is good. There are few drawbacks and using a few seconds here and there can save hours if something goes wrong.

I think it’s basically just that I’m arrogant, so arrogant in fact that I don’t believe I’d ever make such ridiculous mistakes. After all, I’m perfect. Or at least close to it. Or…more accurately I just try to be. But I guess WE ALL make mistakes…..and when those mistakes happen (as they have in the past), I won’t be ready cuz I’m too arrogant to have used Source Control. Sorry, that was some kind of cyclical argument. Basically, I admit I’m flawed and my arrogance is one of my downfalls.

I was in a meeting last Friday and wrote down “Source Control” and “Arrogance” (beside my doodle of Cyclops from the X-Men) I guess as something to blog about. So here it is. :/

/just wanted to write something

Site updates – Migration of professional items to warrenshea.com

Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 11:53 am

Some minor site updates.

I removed the Portfolio from my navigation
And linked Resume to warrenshea.com (still not up yet).

I’ve migrated everything from my worldofwarren.com Portfolio section to my warrenshea.com Portfolio section so there’s not much point in keeping it…I just can’t wait to finish.

warrenshea.com is almost complete. I have about 30 items to put in and I’ve put in like, 23ish….but I still have to go through my [Redacted] work and scour what I can put in, so the list might increase.

Once that’s done, some more writing, and i’m DONE.

I’m really struggling with my professional voice on this website…I want to feel professional, but also fun and playful…like IRL.

Anyways, productive weekend (tho not as productive as I would have liked). I hope the rest of the week is productive

Tutorial: Converting characters into their HTML entity names

Saturday, January 28th, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Purpose of this tutorial
To convert characters in code into their HTML entity names

What you need to know/have
Adobe Dreamweaver

Note
This tutorial uses Adobe Dreamweaver CS4

Procedure
Step 1: Enter your special characters into Dreamweaver’s source. (Or more likely, it already exists in your document).

Step 2: Select the text you want converted

Step 3: Cut (CTRL + X) it

Step 4: Change the characterset to ascii in the meta tag.

Step 5: Paste your copy into the DESIGN portion of Dreamweaver (this is very important)

Step 6: Change the characterset back to UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 (or whatever you had before) and save.

My ramblings
I rarely use this on a personal level but I can’t say I haven’t done it many time professionally. Hopefully this tutorial helps save you some time when you’re like “why doesn’t my code work in this browser?”
