FOOD: Overall 9/10 (Click on the pics for larger pics)

Grilled Calamari

This was good, I think I would have preferred breaded calamari, I didn’t notice it was grilled when I ordered it -_-; I just saw calamari. I went with this over the salads and soups (of course!) as well as the shrimp cocktail…but I’m not sure if I made the right choice.

Escargots Provençal

This was much better than the calamari, the bread + garlic butter was awesome. If I returned, I would get this.

Sterling Silver® New York Striploin

I ordered mine Rare and let me tell you, this may have been the best steak I ever had. More on this later…but it was awesome, I was so satisfied, it was a great feeling :)

Wild Mushroom Risotto

I also had at least 6 mouthfuls of this, it was great as well. I personally wouldn’t get it because it has no meat! :D but it was really great. I would order this for what it was….but not over the steak.

Pecan and Chocolate Tart

The most disappointing part of my meal. I enjoy pecans, and chocolate but I realized after eating this that I don’t enjoy their flavours together. It wasn’t as sweet as I would have liked for a dessert, the crust really diluted the sweetness.

Chocolate Mousse Dome

This was really good, I only had a bit though. Z wouldn’t share >:( If I went back, I would choose this.

Overall, out of the 6 items, I was pretty pleased with 4 of them, and would definitely order them again. The Calamari and Pecan items were okay but compared to Z’s choices, they were a disappointment. So the food, overall, gets a 9/10. Points off for the Pecan dessert but extra points for the epicly good steak.

SERVICE: 8/10
I would give them a 9, the waiter was very courteous, attentive of our water (they refilled often). I deduct 1 mark because our reservation was for 6:30 and we had to wait until 7:10 for our table. Ouch. But once we were seated, everything was all good. We were seated at 7:10, they took our order and probably by 7:20, we had our appetizers, which was awesome. I guess they have tons ready but still…that was nice. Also, as soon as we finished our appetizers, they gave us our entrees. The wait time for food for the appetizer and entree was very little. The wait time for the dessert was a bit longer than expected but Z and I were both stuffed so we could use the eating breather :)

COST: 8/10
45/person + $20 for 2 Martinis + 8 Side order of Back Back Ribs = 118 + Tax/Tip was about $160. Hmm, it was about the same cost as Didier. While I found the food a bit more exotic at Didier, the food was definitely done well. I enjoyed my steak at least 3 times more than my Didier lamb (but I’ve since discovered that lamb might not be a taste for me). I mean, for Winterlicious, the price was pretty good considering for the amount of food we got.

Steak

Let me tell you. At this point in my life, I’ve never enjoyed anything as much as a good steak. As a child and teen, I would eat steaks well done. I don’t know, I had some fear of red, uncooked meat, instilled by my parents I believe. When I was going out with Z, 6.5 years ago, I was still eating well done steaks. And I hated them (big surprise). She introduced me to medium steaks and I loved them. But I’d often get overcooked steaks, receiving medium-well to well when I ordered medium. So I started under-cook-ordering. I would ask for medium-rare but would often/always get medium or medium-well.

And there is nothing worse than a bad steak. By bad, I mean over-cooked. You can’t really take it back or get a new one cuz you’re hungry. Wait, what’s worse than an over-cooked steak is paying a lot of money for an over-cooked steak. And that would often happen.

Even when I visited a steakhouse (I can’t remember the name) for a medium-rare New York Striploin, I received it medium-well. It was so sad :( I was so hungry too, I didn’t time to get a re-fired one or something else, so I just ate it.

Anyways, earlier this week, Z made me rare steak. I don’t think I’d ever had rare. While it was too rare for her it was absolutely perfect for me. I realized rare steaks are the way to go.

So I ordered my steak rare at this steakhouse…and oh. my. f*cking. god. It was so good. I’m totally craving a good, rare steak now…even though I just had one.

My mouth is watering as I write this….

RARE STEAK >>> BACON >>> CHICKEN >>> LAMB >>> ANYTHING

Though Sidecar’s Over Roasted Chicken will beat Bacon, that place might be the only place where chicken >> bacon.

I really should be studying…

Saturday, February 5th, 2011 at 10:05 pm

I’ve felt less inclined to study for the last 2 weeks. I have my OOP Book open, on my desk for two weeks but pretty much untouched. I’ve spent a long time playing games and games of DOTA. Some with Z, which is odd in itself, but most alone. I always tend to do this, play DOTA for a while…and then I lose interesting for months. And then later, I pick it up again for a few weeks.

I’ve been watching Prince of Tennis: National Championship again lately…I realized that in all the time I’ve had it, for some reason, I never had the Shitenhouji VS Seishun Gakuen Doubles 2 match…the comedy twins VS Kaidoh and Momoshiro. I really enjoyed the Fuji match VS Shirashi…I love watching Fuji play.

Sitting here, tired outta my mind but I have to work overtime today, at 10:30 for a release…that’s the only thing keeping me awake at the moment.

Going to a Winterlicious place tomorrow night, which happens to be Super Bowl night! Boourns. My next week is really busy work-wise…

Anyways, I think I’ll really try to study for a bit today…ease back in to that studying groove.

Until next time… :)

Gaming
DC Universe Online – Created a character and played it up to level 30. I am definitely NOT addicted, though it was close for a couple days there :)
Lots of Initial D: Extreme Stage [PS3] w/ my wheel…GT5 and it’s simulation took a back seat to my drift.

Web Development and Design
CSS Book – CSS Mastery – Complete
Started an Object Oriented Book – In Progress…51/632 :/
Start HTML5 Book – To Start
Start ASP.NET 4.0 Book – To Start

Other

Notes
Surprisingly accomplished more this month that I thought…been slacking on reading the OO book. Reason being is that I’ve learned all this already, though I need a good refresher. Still, when I read the book it’s like “oh, I know this….blah blah time for gaming”. With the CSS book I was at least interested to see what else I would learn. Still, my OO isn’t great and I’m only 50~ pages in so I’m sure it’ll surpass my skill at some point, probably soon.

What I want to accomplish in February

Shows / Movies

Books & Manga
Street Fighter: The Ultimate Edition Book 2

warrenshea.com
Finish my Social Network post….you stupid procrastinator (by you, I mean me).

Gaming
Finish Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

Web Development and Design
Object Oriented Book (Finish?)
Start HTML5 and ASP.NET book

Other

Notes
Wondering if I should just buy a Nintendo 3DS when it comes out and play Zelda: Ocarina of Time on that.

I think I’m outta novels and comics to read…I brought home around 70 issues of the Flash from my parent’s house during X-Mas….went through them all while I was sick (that’s all I did was read in bed during the last day of my flu).

EPIC SITE – after watching and re-watching the Social Network, I’ve kind of lost…passion for my EPIC SITE. Reason being is that the purpose of an EPIC SITE is
1. To learn and do something with current technology.
2. To do a great job with a minimal amount of work/maintenance (user-managed content is key).
3. To make some money.
I can’t do 2 and 3….with my EPIC SITE idea, nor am I sure I can dedicate the necessary work, time, and maintenance to the site that I know it needs (based on the idea). So I’m also contemplating what ELSE I can do my EPIC SITE on….if I really can’t think of anything, I may just as well proceed with my current EPIC SITE idea but I don’t plan to decide that until…..April. Yes, April is when I will start dev on my EPIC SITE regardless of how much I’ve learned. Meaning, I’ll have to learn a lot in the next 2 months. But it’s completely doable. :) I should always set reasonable goals for myself…otherwise I just procrastinate!

Feather – Review

Sunday, January 30th, 2011 at 1:01 am

I was looking at steveuy.com, the writer and artist for one of my favorite short story comics/graphic novels. There’s a side-story sequel of Feather, called Feather Rex, that I have never read. Unfortunately, this guy’s store doesn’t deliver to Canada :'( I may have to get these via other means (eBay? Amazon?).

Anyways, as I was browsing around his site, I noticed that his entire Feather series is on the internet, in .jpg form. I don’t believe I ever noticed that before, weird. It’s under http://www.steveuy.com/feather/previewissues.html. Anyways, I thought that was pretty awesome, that these “preview pages” had pretty much the whole story, in image form. Unfortunately, you’d have to click on each image individually…it seemed like the readability/user-interface could have been improved. So what I did was broke out Emacs Dreamweaver and wrote, in PHP, a script to output all the images from the website via some loops and echos into a single page. I perfected the script, ran it once in Internet Explorer, went to the IE cache and voilà. All the image on my computer. Broke out RENAME.exe, a rename program I found over the internet that I’ve been consistently using for years, renamed all the files quickly and then built: http://warrenshea.com/images/feather/.

. . . . . . . : : : : : : : : Now, you can read the whole story here : : : : : : : : . . . . . . .
Issue 1 | Issue 2 | Issue 3 | Issue 4 | Issue 5

Awesome, no? And best of all, all these images were already on the internet, no scanning or hacking at all. Just some creativity :)

Review

Storyline – 10/10
I’ve read this series of comics more than any other short story of comics I’ve ever had. During my first read, I was blown with how…light-hearted turned dramatic this story is. While I don’t re-read the story often, each time I pick it up, I notice more to the story, themes, foreshadowing, flashbacks, symbolism…but what I find is that ever time I read it, I get more emotional. I never get emotional during a first viewing (of almost anything). I think my brain works hard just to make sure I understand everything (I’m not very bright…). Repetition and solid understanding begin to open up my emotional ranges as I start to focus more on character than plot. But imo, Feather has got it all. A great premise, hints of a long history and backstory, it’s simple yet…unexpected. Reasonable yet unpredictable. I mean, you could read it once and get it. But if you read it over and over, I think you start to feel it more. At least, that’s how I feel when I re-read it.

I also love that it’s a complete story. There’s a beginning, middle and end. But there aren’t really questions…it’s all wrapped up into a nice little package. That does make me wonder how Feather Rex is…

Art – 10/10
What caused me to get this book was the art. But not the art of the cover of Feather. It was this guy’s Iceman covers that first caused me to purchase Eden’s Trail, which I also thought was spectacular. It’s definitely not your typical comic. While the detail in the line art is less than a comic, less than even a manga, more like an anime, the coloring is spectacular. Spectacular that even in 2004, 7 years ago, it’s some of the best coloring I’ve ever seen. That each page has different hues, and that they can change from dark blue to bright yellow/red in moments. It’s really something. This thing is less a comic book than a movie (wow, now there would be an awesome idea…). My only complaint, which I’ve come to accept, is that the characters have no nose. That bothered the heck out of me at the start but after so many reads, it’s no longer noticeable.

Character – 10/10
If I could give a rating higher than 10, I would. While the plot is great, this really is a character driven story. It’s all about the characters, the choices they make and the paths they choose. Realistic and understandable…it’s incredible at how a relationship between two friends can be so…..dramatic.
