Battle Royale. The Hunger Games. Titanic. They all have something in common.

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 at 1:58 am

I just rewatched Battle Royale. And then, purely by coincidence of all the Titanic buzz, Titanic. Again.
I’ve seen both multiple times but not in recent years.

This was originally a Battle Royale VS Hunger Games post, having just rewatched Battle Royale. But after watching Titanic, I found there is something they all have in common. But I will write about that later.

Battle Royale VS The Hunger Games
Battle Royale moves quicker than Hunger Games, especially at the start and the set up.
It’s also a bit more realistic…in some ways, unrealistic in others.

I enjoy the of concept of Battle Royale more: that a group of unsuspecting (this is very important) students suddenly emerge on an island and have to kill each other to survive.
In contrast, The Hunger Games has participants that are trained to win the Hunger Games.
Um…doesn’t it kinda defeat the purpose of these games to have some members train their whole lives for them? As I wrote that, I realize that this is actually similar to most reality shows (ex. American Idol/The Voice). That someone with trained musical background could compete with someone who’s never really training a day in his/her life. But I don’t like it like that. It’s not fair. But I guess the Hunger Games isn’t about fair, it’s about gambling and entertainment. I suppose in this scenario, it’s more fun if things aren’t fair.

Damn, I was all set to say that Battle Royale was better from this perspective, but it’s actually accurate to how each backstory and environment is set up. I will still admit that if I were to watch either first, I’d like to have watched Battle Royale first simply to show how the situation affects those completely unwilling to fight, as well as those who are not physically or mentally fit to fight. The Hunger Games does too good a job training people about the battle before it begins. I don’t like that.

What I really liked about Battle Royale was that…it was very accurate to how I believe a similar situation would occur. There are really scared students, students that die easily, students that trust too easily, students that are arrogant. And also, there are students who are pretty powerful. I’ll always remember watching that crazy guy on a cliff, surrounded by people and carrying only a fan…only to get the jump of like 6 people and kill them. So pro. I mean, realistically he should have died to them but it’s well played that the group, in it’s numbers, is arrogant. Like people would be in such groups. And I really believe that kind of arrogance can be taken advantage of.

There was one thing that immediately was shocking to me in the Hunger Games. When they first start the battle and a bloodbath occurs, near the weapons and supplies. Surely the participants have seen previous years and know it’s a ridiculous bloodbath. In all the chaos, it’s very likely even a skilled person can die at the hands of another skilled individual. You don’t win a battle royale (no pun intended) by attacking everyone. You pick people off one at a time using your wit, intelligence, and patience. You strike when people are weak. Like Katniss. But I mean, shouldn’t EVERYONE be doing that? The only way you’d wanna rush in is if you’re SO FAST that you can get a weapon and kill other people before they have a chance. But I doubt, with all these trained members, that any single one member could be that much faster than the rest.

I also dislike the idea of the environment forcibly attacking the participants in the Hunger Games due to the administrator’s pleasure. Who wants to gamble on a rigged game. Katniss is close to the edge. LETS THROW FIRE AND FIREBALLS AT HER. Oh yes, the other contestants don’t have to deal with that simply cuz they didn’t happen to be near the edge? Um. BULLSHIT. If I was betting on someone and a FAKE FIRE killed them, I’d be pissed.

And what’s with the sponsors sending shit to help them. UM. THAT NOISE WILL GIVE AWAY MY POSITION YOU IDIOTS. “Oh good, hear comes my medic—” *dead*. Cuz the guy with the gun heard the noise and capped me.

AM I TREATING THIS GAME OF SURVIVAL TOO SERIOUSLY?

Okay, I think I’m done with THAT rant.

Now, To Compare Battle Royale. The Hunger Games. Titanic.
It seemed a bit strange that I’d find something similar between Titanic and a Battle Royale situation…but let me get to my point.
All 3 movies primarily feature a love story (at it’s core) where the main couple tries to survive, amid a battle of other people’s survival.
In Battle Royale and the Hunger Games, Shuya and Noriko & Katniss and Peeta try to survive while the people around the main characters are trying to survive. That’s the basic premise.
In Titanic, after the ship begins to sink, Jack and Ross try to survive while the people around the main characters are trying to survive. That’s also the basic premise….
How coincidentally alike these movies are. You’d almost think there’d be no similarities.

OMG I just realized that I also watched Scott Pilgrim VS the World and…
It’s about Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers (a love story) as Scott tries to SURVIVE the battles of Ramona’s Exes. YEAH?! ALSO SIMILAR? Except the other characters aren’t really trying to survive, it’s just Scott….but 1/2 the premises is true.

What’s with all these love stories wrapped up in action that I’m watching?
*Thinks about what I plan to watch the rest of this week*
The Walking Dead – main characters trying to survive, rest of the world also trying to survive the zombie apocalypse
Dawson’s Creek – hmm..not much survival here.

I think I’ve been watching too many things regarding survival. Or maybe it’s just that many movies like that concept…
Most video games are about survival (things trying to kill you). Love stories are about a couple’s survival through hardships.

…okay, I’ve written enough about this…for now.
Kinda tired, I should sleep soon.

I realized why I haven’t read anything in a while.

It’s simply that the last book I was reading didn’t interest me. But I want to finish it. I NEED to finish it. It’s part of my personality. Part of my OCD.
That book is currently the Steve Jobs book. I’m 30-60 pages in and definitely not into it. I don’t want to start reading it again. I also don’t want to start reading anything different until I finish that book. Sigh, the problems of being a completest.

Anyways.

I have decided to stop reading Steve Jobs for the near future and focus reading other things. Currently, I have this short book called

The Art of Racing in the Rain.

My (ex-)co-worker was reading it and he mentioned it was quite a sad book. I’m always up for a little emotion, I love media that can make me think, or make me sad.
Happy is easy. I can find lots of things to make me happy.
Anger is easy. I can find soooo many things that piss me off.
But something that will make me really think can be difficult to find.
And while I’m fairly emotional regarding sadness and depression in media, I will enjoy something that will make me feel those things. I guess I can’t complain, but I don’t feel them enough and it’s good to have a nice balance.

You can’t feel true happiness without having felt sadness for without sadness, your happiness would have nothing to be compared with and thus, be the default state.

I think next on my list after that would be the Hunger Games books, followed finally by the Game of Thrones books. I’m not sure if I can actually read all this as reading isn’t something I generally do. But I’ll see where these novels take me.

A common goal. A common enemy.

Thursday, April 5th, 2012 at 1:17 am

While I definitely admit that many people can bond over a number of things, I feel that nothing can make people bond like a common goal. Or a common enemy.

Like any school project, a group will work together best if they share a common goal. If a member doesn’t really share it or won’t work towards it, it’s likely that person will not contribute as much as someone else on the team that will.

And I would consider “finding a significant other to spend the rest of your life with” to be a common goal, which I believe might partially explain why people stay in relationships. And why some relationships don’t last (difference in desire for kids for example, difference in desire for professional advancement, difference in sexual desire, etc…).

I’ve thought that generally, war is like this. That a nation would come together to fight another nation, but if there was no other nation to fight, they would simply fight among themselves. All our national squabbles would be pretty trivial is say, we were at war with another nation (just my opinion). While humanity might fight among itself given no other opponent, I believe we would band together if say, there were a common global threat. Or if we were on the verge of extinction.

If a meteor were to come towards earth, the world (I would hope) would put aside all their difference and all work on a, or many, solutions to save our race.
If the zombie apocalypse were to occur, humanity would help each other out and kill the zombies.
Even in Hunger Games or Battle Royale, in a “1 survivor” type game, there are alliances. Common goals. And the people band together…until their goal is achieved, and then they’re on their own.

If I were ever to try to lead a group of people, I would try to think of a common goal or enemy. For example, if I were manager of a design and development team, I would have a mandate and hire people who believe and uphold that mandate. And fire people who do not. But that’s just me. People will work best if they’re self motivated…

Just some random thoughts.

Dawson’s Creek End Credits <-- that's the title of the song >_<

Thursday, March 29th, 2012 at 2:04 am

As I said, I’ve been watching Dawson’s Creek again lately. There’s this music that plays at the end of each episode in seasons (2-4? 3-4? i dunno) but I really like it, I actually look forward to listening to this when each episode ends.

FYI it’s only 30 seconds..so listen to it a few times!

I don’t know…why, but I get this emotional feeling when I listen to it. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s how I relate to this show but as the piano and flute starts up, I feel an urgency…to live life. And a sadness that no amount of life lived can be enough. That time is fleeting…and it makes me…sad. Like there’s a story there…that isn’t finished or that you won’t ever hear. I DON’T KNOW/CAN’T EXPLAIN.

It just gives me an urge…but to do what, I don’t know.

Listening to the song…bums me out. But I can’t stop…there’s something beautiful in it and I just…sigh…I don’t know. Just what?

/sigh.

Pro eBay sniper

Thursday, March 29th, 2012 at 1:54 am

Okay, that is definitely not only a bad Photoshop job, but it’s pretty scary if I do say so myself.

I just won an eBay auction….sniped at the very end between two people who spent a lot of time slightly counter bidding each other, increasing the price.
I just wanted to write about my eBay experiences, how (I would) bid on a closing auction. I can’t really call myself a pro, despite the title of this post. Maybe it’s not the best way. But it’s how I do it…

Things to do:

1. LOG IN to eBay a few minutes before the auction ends and make sure you’re logged in. Nothing worse than bidding last minute and then having to log in first….screwing up your carefully laid timing.

2. OMG DO NOT BID UNTIL THERE’S LESS THAN 30 SECONDS LEFT. Watch ahead of time to see how many people you’re competing with. The more people, the more likely you’ll have to have a high bid.

3. Figure out what the maximum amount you’re willing to pay is.
…and if you’re like me, figure out a slightly higher REAL maximum amount incase someone beats that bid and, like me, YOU DON’T WANT TO LOSE. OMG maybe I shouldn’t write this guide, too many personal characteristics getting in the way. Anyways…figure out those 2 amounts, you’ll likely only be able to bid twice.

4. Make sure your internet connection’s not too laggy.

5. Anyways…this is how I bid…
In the closing 15 seconds, put your first maximum bid in. eBay won’t just suddenly take that bid. If an item is like, $16 and you put $50, it will list the bid at like, $18. And then someone will have to counter that bid. But you’ll continuously overbid them (eBay does it automatically) until your $50 isn’t enough. eBay is awesome in that way but people don’t know that, they assume it’s like a regular auction.
This way, you put in a max amount you’re willing to pay, but you won’t even pay that much….unless someone else has a higher max bid. And that’s what your second, final last bid is for. And also why you only have 15 seconds. That’s just enough time to bid and confirm bid once. And bid and confirm bid twice if it’s not enough.

That said, I haven’t won all the auctions I do simply because I don’t bid enough. But I know not to bid early and bring up the price for no reason…I never never bid in an auction until the final minutes. And most times I’m beat out, it’s cause someone else has done the same strategy, with a higher maximum bid than I. It’s unlikely those that casually bid small amounts will beat you…cuz they don’t know how to play the game.

BTW: I bought that Green Zelda book…for a game I don’t have. Cuz now I have the Blue Skyward Sword book, the Brown Twilight Princess book, and this Green one….ALL OF THEM! TRIGUIDEBOOK COLLECTION COMPLETE! NOW TO GO FIND A MASTER SWORD (off eBay)….no, seriously, I really want to buy one. Maybe when I have a house.
