Shiny Pikachu

Monday, November 4th, 2013 at 1:36 am

Got a story to tell! It’s Pokemon X and Y related…if you’re a Pokemon video game fan, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Otherwise, this post might not be worth readying.

I got Pokemon X and Y on Oct 21. I played for a bit and ran into a Pikachu near the beginning – level 4. That day or maybe a couple of days later, I ran into another pikachu (the second pikachu I would run into while playing the game). He was slightly different colored so I caught him as well (at the time, I had no idea what a Shiny pokemon was though). I just happen to catch him because he was a different color – his contrast is a bit harsher, he looks more like the cartoon Pikachu than the pale yellow the regular ones are. I leveled up my first pikachu but kept this other pikachu in the bank. Just kept him because of his color variation.

When I got back to Canada from my US trip, I met up with my nephew, 7, on Saturday Oct 26 as I planned, to give him Pokemon X. As he was playing pokemon, I decided to trade him my extra pikachu. He was happy to get it. I think I gave him a level 4-5 Pikachu.

As I was playing on Sunday night, I was going through my Pokedex and I saw a “Shiny Pikachu”. I had no idea what it was so I googled it. Basically – a shiny pokemon is/can be an incredibly rare Pokemon. And there can be any number of Shiny Pokemon. And here, I had a Pikachu – the most beloved and well known Pokemon character. I had a SHINY PIKACHU, combining the rareness of being a Shiny and the rareness of being a Pikachu, running into and capturing a Shiny Pikachu is pretty damn rare.

Realizing my mistake of giving away that pokemon to my nephew…I started getting a little antsy/nervous. Letting go of such a rarity…from the collector point of view, is…unheard of for me. I was also googling the possible/potential monetary value of such a pokemon – but couldn’t come up with anything.

Anyways, despite knowing it was a Shiny Pokemon, I didn’t want/need to get it back immediately. I was thinking of just going over next Saturday (Nov 2) to pick it up. But then, on Monday, I spoke to my co-worker, Sophia, who is also playing the game. I told her my story and she was SHOCKED – knowing full well that a Shiny Pikachu is pretty rare. Talking to her made me really antsy for getting it back…

So…that Monday, I drove to Richmond Hill to steal back the Pikachu I had given my nephew. I didn’t want to tell him of its specialness, knowing that he might do something like accidentally release or let it go. He’s only 7! I wasn’t even sure if he still had it (but I was hoping – after all, it’d only been 2 days).

I went over and, while he was distracted with a Pokemon book I got him, swapped a level 9 Pikachu with his level 10 Shiny Pikachu. Afterwards, he was playing again and he’s like “what happened to my quick attack?”. And then his Pikachu levels to level 10 and he’s like ‘OH! My Pikachu just leveled to 10! And it wants to learn Quick Attack!’ not knowing I made the swap and that his Pikachu hit 10 and learned Quick Attack already :P

Anyways, all in all, I have my Shiny Pikachu back at level 10. He’s safely on my 3DS for…whatever I may use him for ;) My nephew is none the wiser, and happy. I explained everything to his parents and they were okay with it and what I did – they’re happy. Everyone’s happy!

I told this story to my co-workers and they had a reaction I wasn’t anticipating. They thought it was incredibly devious and immoral to steal the Pokemon back from him without telling him. But to my defence, I know that
a) he wouldn’t notice the difference
b) I gave the Shiny Pikachu to him in the first place
c) I also gave him the game, and a book ($70~ total)
d) He doesn’t know or understand the value/rarity of such an item.

Anyways, if I were in that situation again, I’d do it again. No hesitation.

That’s my Shiny Pikachu story :)

Pokemon Y Status:
66 Gardevoir
66 Lucario
67 Pikachu
67 Grenina
67 Charizard
68 Roselia

7 Gym Badges
Pokedex: 293
Time: 35:32

Captured 91 different Pokemon including:
10 Shiny Pikachu
20 Combusken (evolved from Torchic – a special offer)
20 Tyrunt – picked the dinosaur over the…other fossil
50 Yveltal – The Legendary Y Pokemon, which I caught today! Saved before fighting him and had to fight him 3-5 times before I could capture him with a non-masterball pokeball. He kept destroying my team or I’d “kill” him. One of my strategies was letting him kill 5/6 of my team while I wasted moves (statue moves) or prolonged the fight (giga drain) so that after a long time of playing, I could use the timer ball – but that didn’t work.

In the end, I was able to catch him with an Ultraball – I was so happy :)

… after I beat the game, I’m gonna
a) maybe try to catch em all, I don’t know.
b) study and work on my ultimate 6-pokemon PVP team – also, learn strategies and start competing online maybe (actually, I just wanna beat my co-workers)
c) maybe start X and get the other fossil, chespin/fennekin, squirtle/bulbasaur, and the other 2/3 legendary birds. In each scenario, it means playing the full game at least 2 more times…which I could do :)

…though, Zelda will come up Nov 22 and I might just play that :D

Great time to have a 3DS ! Which btw, I pre-ordered the Zelda 3DS XL :) Can’t wait to switch to that damn classy 3DS !

Just checking in…

I was doing so well on blogging this month for the first 15 days but then it all went down the crapper.
Part of the reason was that I was in Chicago again for work just last week, Oct 21-Oct 25. Didn’t blog at all!
And I guess the reason was – new toys! I got my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 (2014) tablet. I also got some Hot Topic clothes (more geek gear – totally running out of closet space) and Pokemon X, X, and Y (that’s 3 games)!

Ed Debevics
Went to Ed Debevics in downtown Chicago on my trip. Their schtick is that their staff is “rude” (but it’s on purpose). It’s pretty cool/funny – it’s a diner with really good food. But the staff wasn’t really rude, more just…comically sarcastic. For example, when I ordered water, the waitress was like ‘pfft, boooring’. And when I wasn’t ready with my order, she was like ‘jeez, you’re taking forever’. Things like that :) When a family with kids comes in through the front door, they ask “how many brats you got?”. Stuff like that…it’s kinda rude but not overly offensive. Comical if you’re in on the joke. I’ve heard that you can ask for the full package, in which they’re really rude and make fun of you. My confidence was not high enough that I could voluntarily subject myself to verbal abuse – so I did not do that (would have been “fun” though, to see what it’d be like).

Pokemon
I have Pokemon Y and Zee and my nephew both have X.
I’ve had Pokemon less than a week (6 days to be precise) and I’m not as far as I’d like :( Was too busy with work the last week…

In my 20 hours of playtime, I only have 2 badges. I’ve got 149 Pokemon in my PokeDex.
My current line-up
35 Gardevoir (Psychic/Fairy) – has Grass/Psychic abilities
35 Roselia (Grass/Poison) – has Grass/Poison/Normal abilities
37 Ledian (Bug/Flying) – has Psychic/Fighting/Bug/Normal abilities
37 Pikachu (Electric) – has Psychic/Electric/Normal abilities
38 Greninja (Water/Dark) – has Dark/Water/Rock/Normal abilities
38 Charizard (Fire/Flying) – has Fire/Dragon/Flying/Normal abilities

These are just my PVE characters though…still need to play/research more before I have my PVP characters. Haven’t played Pokemon in probably 12-14 years so my strategies, as well as my knowledge are quite lacking. I hope to take this more seriously once I’m a bit stronger so that I may play well against the (4) other people that I know IRL that have the game. Must study!

The 3DS Zelda game comes out Nov 22 too and that means that it may take my focus for a while! Must fit in as much Pokemon as possible, until then!

That’s it for now…have another busy work day tomorrow (and the rest of the week). My life is just too busy nowadays :'(

When I dream, it may as well be real

Wednesday, October 9th, 2013 at 12:31 am

I’ve spoken to some people to say ‘they can control the dream’. While I’ve found it to rarely occur, in most cases I’m just along for the subconscious (or is it unconscious?) ride.

I would say that I dream a lot (but that’s hard to back up) – but whenever I dream, I’m pretty much along for whatever dream my mind is creating.
Isn’t it odd that you can doze off momentarily, dream for a few seconds, and within those few seconds, feel like you’re in another world or another you?

I could be in bed one moment and a moment later, travel along the ocean in a floating car. And in no point in my dream do I think ‘hey, I was just on the bed; this isn’t real’. No, my dream mind is thinking ‘Where’s land? My floating car needs turnip juice for fuel and the only way to get it is from those cyborg gorillas in dresses’. No, at no point do I consider such a dream absurd.

…but why not?

What is it that chemically? neurologically? electric impulsey? happens in the mind that causes this? Or do dreams and rational thought or memory exist on different ‘lobes’ (not sure if I’m using this term correctly) and because they don’t ‘talk’, I don’t get logic in dreams. But the memory definitely has to exist as dreams are often filled with people you know or places you know. If so, why isn’t, say, the memory of me lying down on the bed 5 minutes ago come up? Or at least, the logic?

Ugh, I feel like I definitely did NOT do my research prior to writing this post. I tried googling but I come up with crap. Apparently ‘understanding your dreams’ can be posted about for pages. But the actual ‘understanding your dreams from a neurological perspective’ isn’t as easy to find. What, no brain surgeons doing blogging?

That’s it! I’m done for now! Time to go do something I do frequently every day but have no understand of how it’s being accomplished. Kinda like my day job lolol!

Should I resurrect The Secret Project KB?

Sunday, September 1st, 2013 at 11:39 pm

When I left my Secret Project KB a few months ago, it wasn’t doing that well…some traffic, but overall nothing much.
I’ve started noticing more traffic to it lately….

(April 2012 to August 2013)

It’s not a huge spike but it’s pretty good overall.

One thing I did notice is that a few months ago, when googling “Kotobukiya Bishoujo”, my site wouldn’t come up for pages. Like, til page 3 or 5 or something I think.

Right now, that google phrase makes it come up #4. #4 !
It’s currently:
Kotobukiya USA
ebay.com
Facebook.com/kotobukiya
My site!
Amazon.com

…..my site is currently beating Amazon for this phrase!

I’m wondering, given that people are going to it more often, that maybe I should resurrect it.

I haven’t had much time for anything – my personal life has been kinda sh!tty lately (not cuz of problems, I mean cuz I don’t have time for anything lately) – but I’d like to go back and revisit my web projects.

Anyways, just some thoughts…. :)

Peter Principle

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013 at 12:48 am

Just started reading about this ‘Peter Principle’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle) and I’m BLOWN AWAY.

“Employees tend to rise to their level of incompetence.” In more formal parlance, the effect could be stated as: employees tend to be given increasing authority until they cannot continue to work competently.

There are incompetent people in every work place….are they there because they’re too good for the job below them, not good enough for the job they have?
It’s crazy – I understand that I too, will be incompetent at a job eventually. I just haven’t hit the point that I’m bad (or maybe, I’ve hit it and I don’t know). But it’ll come – there are people who will rise above me just as I’ve risen above others. Maybe I’m too new to the manager gig, but I already see that I can’t be a senior manager or director or managing director. There are certain skills I don’t have….for example: A quick-wit. I’m not a morning person. My interpersonal skills are…lacking. Not awful, but not great. My public speaking is mediocre. My stress coping skills aren’t the best. My hair is too spikey.

…is middle management the further I can go as the person I am?

….what’s better, being in a lower role and good at it or being in a high role and being bad at it? I don’t think I could personally accept being bad at a role, I’d rather take a lower role and excel at it.

Solutions:

Alessandro Pluchino, Andrea Rapisarda and Cesare Garofalo used an agent-based modelling approach to simulate the promotion of employees and tested alternative strategies. Although counter-intuitive, they found that the best way to improve efficiency in an enterprise is to promote people randomly, or to shortlist the best and the worst performer in a given group, from which the person to be promoted is then selected randomly.[3] This work won the 2010 Ig Nobel Prize in management science.

….WUH?!?!!? How does that work?!

I have much to consider, this night….
