Ah, US memories that I wish I forgot/didn’t happen anymore

Tuesday, March 18th, 2014 at 12:11 am
  1. Everyone on their cell phone, when driving….and not using a headset…holding their phone to their ears
  2. No one signaling to switch lanes
  3. Not driving in lanes, as long as there’s space
  4. The “no guns allowed” sign on the door to Target
  5. Me telling my coworkers that my GPS died and that I needed to charge it so I don’t take a wrong turn on my way to the airport and get killed. And them nodding, because that’s not an out of the ordinary scenario

The good:

  1. Customer Service is fantastic, way friendlier than up North

That’s all for now.

The right to bear arms in the US has always baffled me. Admittedly, my view is very one sided given that I’ve lived my entire life in a society where guns are not a norm.

Looking at people who are pro-gun defend their stance on public forums, you can really see they truly and fervently believe in guns being a necessary part of their lives.

I wonder if they would change their minds if they lived for a while in our society. Perhaps a scarier thought, would I change my mind if I lived for a while in their society?

I’m fairly sure your mindset would change if you were in their society. If you go to a public place and you know 5% of the people have guns, wouldn’t you want to be one of them (for purely defensive reasons)? Yes, having a gun is a risk itself and there are safety issues with it. But I’d rather be prepared than defenceless (imho).

It’s funny, when I was in the US, someone I know was discussing Detroit and right across the border, Windsor. In Windsor, you can walk around in a park at 9pm and feel completely safe. Right across the border, so close that you could see the other side, not so much (as in, not safe at all).

Definitely a huge culture change, despite our countries being so close and the people being so similar. I blame the law – the right to bear arms. Nothing you can do about that now tho…quite a problem, the US has there, imo.
