Sites Updates Part 2

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

1. PHP Session Variable
I (think) I fixed that PHP Session thing. I have no idea how. I messed with the function a bit but didn’t change anything fundamental…it still seems to be working okay for now. I don’t know why. :S

2. Gallery – Updated
I’ve been able implement the structure I intended…I need to fill it with content though.
Check it out:

I need/want to make more albums…I’ve got a few photos now, I’ve been taking lots of pictures…but I need to edit all of them, they don’t turn out too hot without my Photoshop editing.

Non-site update: I organized my photos today…about 2-3 years worth of digital photos.

Filling a website with content is the boring part…thinking about structure, and HOW you’re gonna do stuff is the fun part. I’m not totally past that but I’m mostly past it. SAD FACE.

1. Hobbies & Projects Section – Added
Organized and caught up on all my shows…it feels pretty good. I caught up on over 30-40 30 minute shows in 1 day (at 20m a show, that’s about 10-13 hours worth). I also caught up on a few episodes of House, Smallville, Breaking Bad and FlashForward. I’m finally completely caught up with everything. I would always fall behind…but I hope with this list, I’ll be able to stay on top of things. Since I caught up on every show that I usually watch, I started Burn Notice. It’s okay…kinda wish I started True Blood instead but I’ll probably get to that in a week.

2. Language Reference Section – Added but Incomplete
I’ve added some PHP content into this section…I still have lots to add but I don’t really want to…right now. It’s kinda boring, despite having a bit of usefulness in the future.

3. Gallery Section – Added but Incomplete
The format/structure isn’t what I intended. Ideally, I would like “albums” on the right hand side…and each album you click on would show thumbnails on the left, main content area.

4. Resume Section – Not Added yet but I’m working on it…kinda
Not really looking for a job right now so I don’t see a real need to update it…but I might as well while I’m working on the site? I might do a half-ass’d job now but leave it a tad incomplete. I haven’t updated it in over 3 years…I haven’t even updated since I became a developer.

5. Naruto Theme – Haven’t started
…But I want to. The design seems crazy complicated/time consuming…and fun. But maybe I should complete more of the above before I start…

I’ve always been like this…a crazy multi-tasker to the point that it takes me forever to complete anything. Because everything slowly gets completed at the same time. I can’t focus on something if it doesn’t challenge my mind. If I work on something tedious and boring too long, I tend to simply get distracted…and then do completely irrelevant things (play PS3, take naps, etc). Filling in the PHP content for the Language Reference section was ridiculously boring, I doubt I could do it if not for Burn Notice maintaining most of my interest.

Side Note – Really tempted to start Zelda: Ocarina of Time…I have an itching for some gaming, I’ve been playing Virtua Tennis 3 lately ever since Saturday when I played it with my friends for but I think I want something a little more…me.

Site Updates cont’d + OMFG

5. To Do – It’s been brought to my attention that this session variable + themes don’t work in IE OR SAFARI. WTF. It’s a freaking php session variable, not even related to the client side (I believe). Why would it work in FF and not the other 2 sh!tty browsers. I, unfortunately, have to fix this as it’s one of the main items of attraction for my page. Sigh…….why do I have to fix my AWESOME code because of some SH!TTY browsers (and as I write this, I realize it’s probably my shitty code and their proper rendering browsers…).

6. Comment – Did some more cross browser testing and things don’t work perfectly on IE or Safari, not like they do on Firefox. It looks decent though so I might not change anything….Google Analytics tells me that my users are mostly FF users on Windows, this might be biased tho as most of these stats are probably me, as I refresh the page constantly while I’m developing.

My question is: who’s using Chrome? I know who’s using Safari on a Mac (that was easy to determine…)

Upon saving the above image and typing the name “browser.gif” more than 4 times, I incorrectly typed it BOWSER.gif each time…MLIM (My Life is Mario).

3. & 7. DONE + OMFG COMMENT – I just spent the last FOUR of the most boring hours ever copying 83 comments from my old blog to my new blog. The most time consuming part was going back to each post and setting the correct time-stamp. Also, I had to use 2 browsers as well as both my monitors to do this efficiently so I didn’t watch anything either. 4 hours…that’s 6 x 1 hour long episodes (and yes, that math is correct, 4hours=240m=6(40m episodes) because a 1 hour long show minus commercials is ~40m).

Site Updates

I decided to post my warrenshea.com site updates…I kind of want a log of what I’ve worked on, etc.

1. Complete – I got my RSS Reader widget (on right hand side) working. I had to mess with the wordpress widget code so that it’d be styled properly. Finding the code probably took the longest…figuring it out was tricky too, but doable.

2. To Do – I’m creating a TO DO page….to keep track and status of the shows I’m watching. I generally can’t stay up to date with my shows because I don’t know when they air, and I don’t know what episode I left off at. I’m going to create a database table and an admin page for simple updating…Googling PHP and CRUD gave me what I needed in a few minutes. Hopefully finish building that tonight! Then I’ll have 3 sections to my site! Yay!

3. To Do – I’m bringing all my comments over from blogspot, WITH correct timestamp. It’s taking FOREVER and it’s uber annoying for reasons I won’t go in to.

4. Comment – So far, I’m finding that PHP is a lot like regular ASP…very spaghetti code-ish. I tend to like spaghetti code, I find it linear and easy to read….but, I figure spaghetti code is kinda like inline styles of which I don’t like…I like keeping my styles and stylesheets completely separate from the rest of my code. It’s probably that I just don’t have much experience with Ravioli code…I’ve used it before but I grew up with spaghetti code. Still…I’ll have to change that, Ravioli >> Spaghetti after all…my EPIC SITE will be Ravioli, that I guarantee.

new website + stealing + House

1. I’m working on a new website…

http://www.warrenshea.com/

It’s currently being built in PHP, saving my ASP.NET for another site…might as well (finally) learn PHP…and frig, is that language ridonculously easy and intuitive. I’m also going to incorporate this blog’s content into that site…and actually get rid of my blogspot eventually but that will be in time. I’ve got wordpress on my new site which uses PHP so it works well with my site already…which is sweet….and perfect…and planned.

This means I’ve got a new addiction that’s usurping blogging…working on my new website. At least that is more productive for me. It’ll mean I’ll probably blog less.

2. Stealing

I’ve never smoked. I’ve never done any drugs. I don’t jaywalk when I’m alone. I’m a fairly law abiding citizen…with the exception of my speeding while driving. Recently, I’ve begun stealing. Cutlery. From restaurants I dine at. Now, I’ve only done it twice…but I do so enjoy it.

First, it was at a sushi place called Ginza, this was 4 months ago…I took some nice chopsticks (see below).

And today, I was at the Keg…and I took these…forks. They’re so cute!

3. House

I watched the season finale of episode 4…and it was awesome. I was speechless for minutes after watching it. I had tears in my eyes…it was so sad. For me, a show that can cause these types of emotions means that it’s a good show. That it’s doing its job. There aren’t many shows that can do that to me. The only other one coming to mind is Battlestar Galactica. Anyways…just wanted to write about that. I’m on S05E18…hoping to be caught up on House by tomorrow. This means watching about an entire seasons worth in 1 day. It’s doable. I have no life.
