warrenshea.com – complete!

www.warrenshea.com

(go to it)

After months and months of working on this (including weeks and weeks where I hadn’t touched this at all), this site is complete.

I started out all well and good – developing. It was fast. It was fun. I was doing things I hadn’t done before. I became a jQuery master (well, not quite) but I got a lot more familiar with it.
worldofwarren.com is coded well but there are some best practices that aren’t met simply because when I started developing this site, I wasn’t as strong as I am now (no shame in that). I started developing this after my World of Warcraft addiction and while I’d learned a lot from work, I hadn’t been developing in my free time so I hadn’t kept my skill as sharp as it could have been. It was a dull sword, barely used in 5 years.

warrenshea.com isn’t like ^. As stated on that website, it’s developed to the best of my current abilities. No doubt. It follows all the best practices that I currently know of. It will definitely be interesting to see, in a year, how many things are wrong/I can improve.

Anyways – While making the site, I slowed down at a few specific moments: generally all had to do with content gathering or writing.
I stopped when I had to do my portfolio cuz going though all my work over a decade of items was tedious and boring.
I stopped when I had to write my portfolio content cuz professional writing is hard for me.
I stopped when I had to write my experience / resume portion cuz…professional writing is hard for me.

“Why was the writing so hard?” people have asked. The writing was the most difficult because it was hard to convey my voice. I wanted to sound professional, without sounding too formal. I’m not super professional; I wear sneakers, have an untucked dress shirt and come in late every day. I don’t want to convey that I’m not that type of person in my professional site. And I also had to be consistent with my writing. I would read something I’d written and read something else and they’d have completely different voices and tones. So then I had to fix one…but which one? That went on for a while until I decided to put all my copy into a word document first, before bringing it to the website. That helped keep my voice consistent.

This project really sucked because while I wanted to work on other projects, my sense of completion was overwhelming. How can I start another site when this one isn’t finished?

Anyways, it’s done. My LinkedIn profile has been updated as well, which was also one of my goals upon completing warrenshea.com. Next: building a resume…but that should be easy now that the content is mostly all written out and I have a portfolio site. I have no rush to do that as it won’t take long and I can do it when I need to.

Also: thanks to those that read over my content, gave me usability advice, and/or corrected my grammar. It was much appreciated!
Also: thanks to those that saw my earlier designs and were kind enough to tell me politely that they sucked. You were right and I appreciate that.

Bonus: here are some earlier mockup attempts:

I won’t lie. I’m proud of this site. I’m proud of the steps that took it here. Originally thinking of building a strictly fluid layout: fluid height, fluid width, fluid font-size and everything…and realizing that was a horrible, impossible idea. Scraping that and working on design after design until I found one that worked. Then, taking each page and making them unique and awesome. There are only 6 pages but they’re all well thought out, original and unique. Okay, not that original and unique, but the ideas I came up with aren’t used that often at least. I spent a lot of time on each of them asking myself: “What is the message I’m trying to convey?” “What is my voice?” “How can I make this unique and usable?” “What is a simple, intuitive way for a user to go through information”. I asked myself these questions multiple times with every page and I think it shows. This isn’t a generic portfolio site. There’s personality in here. There’s depth. There’s care. I’m not trying to boast, it’s honestly how I feel. I’m rarely proud of my work, especially the day after I’ve finished it. But I’ve been proud of this site for a while. It’s one of my finest, high quality accomplishments :)

Please feel free to check the site out and provide feedback.

Thanks!

PC – Out of commission Q_Q

Okay. This month was bad for blogging. Here’s my second “Why I haven’t blogged much this month” post >_< . . . Mon, May 14 - GF hears weird computer buzzing noise. I believe it's a fan, so I decide to clean it (the next day). Tue, May 15 - Take 3 hours to clean the computer. Took out the HDs and fans and cleaned everything. Re-wired the computer wires to take less space and be more organized. Boot computer. All is well. Wed, May 16 - Wake up and my comp is in (DoS? what's before Windows now?). I guess the boot screen.

Warning: Primary HD Failure.

uh oh.
I’m able to restart my computer a few times and eventually, somehow I get into Windows…but I periodically get a warning…

Try to go to Canada Computers and get a new SSD HD. Sold out Q_Q. A night without my computer = :( But fortunately, my 3 external drives are fine, so I plug one into my Mac, and I’m able to watch How I Met Your Mother (currently rewatching). Also, I decide it’s a good idea to clean my keyboard and mouse.

Thu, May 17 – Try to boot my (sometimes) failing primary HD…and it works, I can get into Windows after a few tries. But then…my keyboard and mouse no longer work. I guess cleaning them…wasn’t a great idea, as they seem kinda broken. My keyboard still kinda works, my mouse is just dead. :(

Got a new SSD HD, keyboard, and mouse.

Fri, May 18 – Had the day off. Spent the whole day bringing my new computer up to speed. And then…argh, freaking had some Apple iTunes issues that I was working on for hours. Lost all my iPhone game saved information…(not Tiny Tower! whew!). Also, I had some trouble with my ID and purchasing games in the last few years…so I lost some of the games I purchased >:( Going to email Apple about that…

Anyways…my computer’s pretty much back up to speed now. It’s been a tough few days!

For next time, I have a Google Draft for what I need to save:

  • Export Bookmarks
  • Export Dreamweaver Settings (FTP)
    C:\Users\Prometheus\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4
  • Export Firefox Settings (FTP)
    C:\Users\Prometheus\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\wdvci35o.default
  • Export uTorrent Settings
    C:\Users\Prometheus\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent
  • Export SQL Server Connection Information
    C:\Users\Prometheus\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\Settings\CurrentSettings-2011-10-21.vssettings

Good thing is, I can still boot into my old computer, if needed. If there are settings I forgot to export or anything. It’s actually the best, most pleasant Hard Drive failure I’ve ever had :)

Anyways, off to catch up on some blog posts and keep rewatching HIMYM :) Almost watched all 7 seasons in like…1.5 weeks or something. I must have watched 2-3 seasons in one day, on Friday >_< That seems…unhealthy.

Haven’t updated in 7 days?! O_O time flies

Monday, May 14th, 2012 at 1:25 am

I was shocked to see that I haven’t updated this blog in 7 days. It didn’t seem like it at all.

My schedule has been pretty busy.

Wednesday – stayed at work late, til about 10pm-ish?

Thursday – stayed at home in the morning, but took a work call from 10am-12am. Then, went to work and proceeded to work from 1pm…all the way til 5:30am. Yes, 5:30am! Including lunch, it was a 19.5 hour work day!? ZOMG. Slept at 7am…(so was up for 22 hours).

Friday – …woke up at 2pm..worked til 6pm…then went back to Richmond Hill for a mother’s day dinner, followed by going to my friend’s place for a bbq. I don’t know when I slept but…

Saturday – …woke up at 5pm :S Got ready and went out to “Board Game night” with my friends from 8pm-12am.

Sunday – Came home from game night at midnight…was supposed to work all night…but got tired and fell asleep at 3am. Woke up at 3:45am and joined a work call from 3:45am – 5:30am. The slept from 5:30am to 7am….and woke up to drive Z to her 10k run. Proceeded to stay awake…on around 2.5 hours of (broken up) sleep…until 12 (noon)…when I finally got home and crashed. Slept til 3:30pm. And then from 4:30pm-7pm again. And then from 11pm-1am….and now I’m blogging before I hit the sack again.

It’s been such a mess on my sleeping this week. It actually makes sense why I haven’t blogged in 7 days…the last 5 days have been super busy. I just haven’t had a chance.

I’ve been thinking of something deep and philosophical. I will definitely post it, once I’ve gathered my thoughts. :) Stay tuned!

That glass shattering moment…

Monday, May 7th, 2012 at 4:08 pm

…when I was talking to the senior developer we just hired on our team and explained that we do ASP.NET/ASP and use SQL Server.

And he replied with
“Uh, just so you know, I don’t know any JavaScript”.

.
.
?
.
.

And then I realized…that not only did this senior developer not know JavaScript but that he didn’t know there was a difference between ASP.NET and JavaScript.

.
.
O_O
.
.

That was a hard day. And the days that following, ever realizing this “senior” developer was not at all qualified.
