Clumsy

Thursday, September 15th, 2011 at 12:21 am

I don’t know what happened but I’ve turned into a clumsy oaf person. I used to be very careful about things…how I moved, watching my surroundings, etc. If I misstep, I’d be quick to correct.

But lately…I don’t know what happened…

I would walk straight and then suddenly veer into, and possibly graze a wall. I’ve spilled at least 2 glasses of water within the last month….one was today, which caused me to write this post. I don’t know what’s up with me and/or my body.

Clumsy…is not a trait I would like to have. I think almost everything is avoidable with proper awareness of surroundings and carefulness.

A local dev environment

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I hate deving locally….and I know I’m in the minority of developers who feel this way.

As I write my list of pros and cons….I figure I’ll just make a pro/con chart. Like in Gilmore Girls. (ahh, I didn’t just write that…).

PRO/CON list of developing on the server directly

PRO

  • I just like the idea of making a change and having it directly affect production. Once you make the change, and you’re happy – you’re done.
  • I guess this should go with the point above, but I don’t like “releasing” or “promotion” of files. There’s always the strange chance something might work in dev, but not production because of different server settings, or someone forgot to document that something should be promoted (like a DB table, or certain files).
  • Hard Drives fail….and it would suck to lose all your work. When your information is stored on a server, the chance of failure is not only less likely, but you’re technically paying them for their services you don’t see (like backups)
CON

  • As I experienced recently, network issues (your ISP or their environment) can prevent you from doing work
  • Obviously the “make the change directly in production” idea doesn’t work for large or high traffic sites.
  • When I want to run old .asp files from my past, I’d have to upload them to the server, rather that just try files locally….such a pain!

Now, I GET that DEVing on the server directly isn’t used in any professional environment. But for sites like worldofwarren.com or warrenshea.com, that get so little traffic, and the users/readers are people I know IRL (generally), I don’t really care if stuff is down or broken or whatever.

Anyways…………all that said. I still like deving on a server directly.

But with my extra storage space on c:\ , I’ll throw all those local deving things I need. IIS7.0, XAMP thing…maybe create some Linux VM or something….just to do it. I was running at 89GB/100GB used. 11G is still a lot but I had to delete certain games and stuff to make room…and delete certain programs (Adobe Premiere Q_Q)….but with my new setup, my c:\ is now 89/200GB used. Plenty of room for stuff :D

I’ll give local development a try…it’s especially more important for an ASP.NET application.

Don’t get me wrong, I do local development all the time at work….I know how it works. Just for personal stuff, I find it more of a nuisance than a benefit.

Finally getting around to a backup

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 at 12:12 am

So I’ve been researching 3TB hard drives for a long time. I kept finding unreliable reviews for all the current 3TB drives. Eventually, I found somewhere with a lot of review – Amazon.com (duh!)

I ended up getting a 3TB WD Elements drive.

3TB – Media I: Cartoons, Anime, and Shows
2TB – Media II: Comics, Manga, Movies, Music
300GB – System: System (C:\) + Temp Files (Download, t*rr3Nt5)
500GB – My Documents: Web Design and Development Files (Photoshop, Flash, Code), My Photos, My Stuff, My Videos + Files: Pictures, Programs
750GB – BACKUP: Media that’s hard to get back, My Documents Backup
750GB – This was a sorta failed HD before so I’m not relying on it….but…this will be backup as well. Backup of my other 750 GB. I will leave it unplugged….but maybe copy files to it ever 1/2 year. I dunno, it seemed to fail, but since I did a format of it, it’s running pretty well.

I used to back things up so frequently …. but to be honest, I haven’t done a good backup in years. If my HD with my pictures failed….god, that’d be terrible. About 5 years ago, I burned everything tons of DVDs…but burned DVDs are NOT reliable. As proof – when I needed those discs, I kept getting Cyclic Redundancy (is that what it’s called? I forget…). Hard Drives are not reliable either even.

Anyways, I’ve spent about 2 nights simply moving files. “26 hours remaining” was one of my transfer windows :O
I haven’t been able to touch many of my files….and I watched a lot of tennis the last 3 days. U.S. Open Finals and Semi-finals. I’m glad I did, I had a lot of fun…Also, I was watching Prince of Tennis almost all day yesterday :D

Also, I’ve been organizing files from my past work terms, into my current file organization, for my portfolio for warrenshea.com. There are still tons of things/sites I need to get from my current place of employment…hopefully I’ll do that some time this week. Then my portfolio will really explode (it’s lacking quite a bit lately).
