Watching Sports + warrenshea.com Updates

Monday, June 6th, 2011 at 11:53 pm

I’ve been meaning to get into [read: watch] some kind of sports for years. It’s tough, I’m so out of it.

I wouldn’t mind getting into either:
Hockey
Basketball
Tennis
Football

As far as sports go, I’m actually interested in watching those (above) and probably not in any other. I have fun watching them, despite not knowing much.

This wouldn’t be the reason why I want to watch sports but sometimes…it’s just nice to be able to converse on a different topic than what I regularly talk about. I have TV shows, movies, anime, video games, comics, toys, electronics, web development. Those are my easy topics. I have topics I generally avoid, religion or politics. And somewhere in between that would be food, photography and sports.

Even when I watch games, I don’t know who’s playing. I see a good dunk, a great goal, a smart play, a nice break….I see physical feats and interesting circumstances that lead to a goal/score/point/whatever but….it’s hard to really talk about it w/o knowing more.

Next season, hopefully I can get more interested….start getting into something else. Open up a new world of knowledge and interest. I’m getting bored with what I currently know. I’m tired of being left out in conversations that I’m interested in, but just so lost that I can’t keep up with the conversation. It’s not a feeling of stupidity, more a feeling of lack of knowledge. I don’t like it at all.

Kind of weird combination of posts..but as I was watching hockey tonight (Stanley Cup Finals Game 3), I was also working on my warrenshea.com design. I’ve been super frustrated lately with what I’ve done but I finally feel like I’m coming up with a winning conceptual design. In my previous design, I really just found something interesting and started to dev right away. Mistake. I should have spent more time on conceptual design…because what I had ended up as a design failure. I’m finally doing something I’m satisfied with. More ME. I’ve been avoiding doing work because of my mental block but now that I’m enthusiastic about my work again, hopefully I can make some real progress!

/back to work

Tennis! You should get into tennis! I could totally clue you in on what’s going on :p Well, I haven’t kept up with it lately (for obvious reasons) but I still know whose who and what’s what.

Let the learning begin! I generally get how tennis is played, how scores are kept, slices and spins, etc (as I think about it, Prince of Tennis taught me a lot! [excluding the special moves]). What I don’t know is like, who’s strong right now. Who has the rivalries, etc. I know ABOUT Nadal and Federer…but that’s pretty much it. I need to watch more…but I don’t know when the good games are on :S

Well the French Open just ended, but the US Open should be sometime this summer.

But basically Federer used to be #1 for like years (and is actually #1 of all-time) but after he got mono/had kids/got old (he’s like late 20’s, early 30’s) he’s been slowly declining and is now in #3. When Federer was #1, Nadal was in #2 like the whole time, and now Nadal is #1.

BUT Djokovic, the #3 for a while is actually doing very well lately and is currently #2, VERY close to #1 (like 50 points away or something).

(The ranking system is called ATP Ranking, and each major tournament gives you a certain amount of points based on how you rank/what round you get to. And the grand slams gives you the most points.)

So basically it’s usually Federer, Nadal and Djokovic vs each other and whoever else happens to be doing well in that tournament. (Usually the other good guys are Murray, Del Potro, etc).

By the looks of it though, if Djokovic can get to a higher round than Nadal in the US Open, he’ll be number one most likely. But that’ll probably only happen if Nadal gets another injury, or if someone else is doing REALLY good randomly.

    What else…

Well playing styles you get to know the more you watch the players, and they generally play differently depending on who they’re up against. So you’ll kind of figure that out on your own.

The woman’s side is always sporadic. There’s no like consistently good player. The #1 for the woman always changes like every year. So I don’t really pay much attention to it.

    LOL you’re so awesome Karol.

I learned quite a bit actually, about Djokovic, ATP, and I didn’t know Federer wasn’t in his prime anymore….so yeah, I don’t know much. :/ And I really only know Federer and Nadal from Virtua Tennis 3 :S

I think next steps are watching more tennis…and reading up more. It’s hard to read out of context for cuz I’m such a n00b.

Let me know when the US Open is. Right now, I only have the food channels and regular channels…I think I should start getting the sports channels and just leave it on and stuff
