Site Updates – Sections

Sunday, January 6th, 2013 at 11:54 pm

Whoa. When was the last time worldofwarren.com had updates!?

I’ve been meaning to create a TO DO list section for a while. I had to make it in a way that would be easy to edit – that is, NOT a code page (cuz opening up code via a code editor is a pain), and NOT a wordpress page as finding that wordpress page to edit is a pain. Also, editing a wordpress page is a pain.

Also, my co-worker, Grant, said that he doesn’t consider watching a movie as an achievement. But I do (my threshold of achievements is lower :S).

So I made an Achievements section. A place to track things in my life in progress, things to start (TO DO List) and easily track things I’ve done (Achievements).

I built a simple admin section on Friday: Achievements Admin. And no, you cannot edit anything in this section.
Originally, I created a textbox where I had to fill in a password – that was the only way you could edit something. But I changed it around so that the password input is hidden and the value is derived from the URL (so the URL linked above is not the URL *I* use).

The cool thing is that while the INSERT and DELETE only activate when you click their buttons (as the page needs to refresh to add/remove the item), the UPDATES to any existing item are updated via AJAX POSTS. So there’s no “Submit” when you make an edit, you edit the textbox and it will change the database. Assuming again, that the password works. Beautiful :)
(and yes, I could have made the INSERT and DELETE AJAX POSTS as well but I don’t think it was worth the effort).

Links sections removed.
I moved Friend’s links to the right side of the homepage.

Projects sections removed.
I combined it with my Hobbies section.

Figure Review sections added.
I’m not sure how much use I’ll get out of this but I wanted to do figure reviews for my non-Kotobukiya Bishoujo figures.

Want to refocus. It’s a new year and I feel motivated!

Blogging about Blogging Part ?

Monday, December 31st, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Just realized this weekend that I have another reader on my site.
To be honest, I have no idea how many people read my content other than me and my girlfriend.

I think there are some people who check it on a consistent basis – on average once a day.

I know there are some people of whom I send certain posts to, to read. They usually read my posts (and like them) but I don’t think they come back :'(

I know there have been someone consistent people that go to my site – but that they eventually stop…

I’m starting to question the value of this site.

While I still like to write occasionally, it’s getting harder and harder to write about interesting things. Let’s face it, my life is pretty mediocre :S

I don’t really use my accomplishments’ “What I hope to accomplish this month” portion anymore as my TO DO list. It was really important at some point, measuring the work I do…but I seem to have slowly lost some motivation…

I’m wondering if I should revamp the site a bit – put a stronger focus on some topics, but not others? But then…I’ll post even less. And I like posting a lot lol.

Oddly, I frequently check my own site to see if I’ve updated anything (which doesn’t make sense, I know). Generally, when I do that, I check when my last post is. If my last post is 3-6 days ago, I try to think of something interesting to write.

I’m losing interest in some of my projects……………………………………
want to do something new.

I wonder if blogging has increased my..um…word…range….um, vocabulary. That’s it.
I haven’t played scrabble or words with friends in years. But I wonder if I got better at it, through my writing?

/that’s it for now, Happy New Year :D

USB SNES Controller

Friday, December 28th, 2012 at 5:36 pm

I purchased an SNES USB controller recently off eBay (around $10) for 2 reasons:
1. I can play SNES games on my emulator on my PC
2. I can play SNES games on my Samsung Galaxy SIII phone, as it has a microUSB port (so I need a microUSB to USB adapter).

Anyways, I got my USB controller last night and to my disappointment, it sucked. The buttons felt weird, the controller looked ugly, etc etc. See the pic below (the real controller is on the left)

I was disappointed. So I decided to transfer the circuit board on my USB SNES controller to the shell of my legit SNES controller.

It took me a few hours, some of the things didn’t line up well/properly. Had 2 break 2-3 plastic peices on my SNES controller to fit the USB circuit board. I had to use a mix of pieces from both controllers to make it work. But a few hours later, and I got it to work very well. :D

I need to buy another vintage SNES controller though. On the hunt for that right now.

It’s good though as the SNES controller I used for the USB thing already had a couple problems with it. But now it’s a USB SNES controller, which is cool.

That was a few of my hours last night…. :)
