Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) – I still got it ;)

Sunday, November 7th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Yesterday, on a whim, I decided to play, and beat Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) in 1 sitting. I’d done it before (though when I look back at it, it’s not such a feat as it doesn’t take that long). I didn’t have time yesterday so I dedicated part/most of today to it.

This time around, I timed myself…
I started precisely at 1:00pm today
I played straight until 7:13pm

So it took about 6 hours and 13 minutes. I’m sure I could cut down another 30m-1 hour if I played again right now. I haven’t played this game in at least 6 years but this being one of my childhood games, I know it very well…but not perfectly. I lost some knowledge here and there along the way. I couldn’t remember where 3 heart containers were…3 of 24. I spent quite a bit of time looking for those/trying to remember where those were.

Anyways, I had a lot of fun. Good to know I still got it…never will I know any game as well as my SNES games from my elementary school/teen years. That’s when I had the most time and when I knew my games inside out. At least I was still able to beat this game, in one sitting, without any real problems :) Next on to Zelda: Ocarina of Time!

DC Universe Online adware destroys my PC

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 at 12:28 am

This post was original written last Tuesday (Sept 7, 2010).

So, a couple of days ago, I try to sign up for the BETA for the DC Universe Online MMORPG (I swore never to play another MMO…but I’m too tempted with the superpowers of flight and superspeed…I don’t plan to play it much, just want to experience their powers a little).

There’s a PS3 and PC opt-in, on their official site. I did both. For the PC version, you have to create some Sony account….when I enter in my custom username, I’m hit with an AVG (Free + Awesome Anti Virus software) alert saying some of my files have been infected.

W. T. F.

Anyways, I purge the error and continue with the registration (inputting an on-the-spot random password and one of my spam email accounts)…looks successful (and I think/hope it is).

I do a random restart a couple days later and there’s an error: It can’t find one of the virus-infected files. I’m thinking “good, because I purged it”…but as I find out, there’s still some traces of it in the registry as well as my system32 (which is why the error occurred – the registry was looking for the infected file to start). I stop/kill process run32.dll or whatever…and delete a reincarnating registry entry upon booting my Win7 in safe mode.

Everything looks clean, my registry, my msconfig startup, it looks all good.

This morning, I’m greeted with an error saying files are infected. I remove the files and it crashes my computer (AVG gives you a warning that removing infected, system files causing instability and possibly crash…so I’m not scared). I boot my computer and it can’t find the boot drive. Now I’m scared.

I restart and luckily, I’m able to boot in Safe Mode. I do so and copy my “Users”, “Program Files”, and “Program Data” folders to my external drive…I’m going to have to (and I don’t mind) doing a reinstall. But it sucks cuz I was planning to work from home tonight but it looks like I’ll have to stay in the office to get my stuff done. Boourns. So, because my Win7 is currently in safe mode, I couldn’t check the internet/weather like I usually do in the morning. I walk to work and get rained on. That must be the God that I don’t believe in, pouring salt on my wound. Jerkface.

So my plan is to do a Reinstall of Windows 7…possibly start tonight or whatever.

It’s funny, I’ve probably gone through at least 60 reformats/windows installs throughout my years. When I was younger, I would install Windows 95 and Windows 98 upgrade…and if you connected to the internet, w/o Anti Virus software, you’d get like, viruses….just streaming into your comp. At least that’s how I remember it…so I’d say about 50 of the reformat/reinstalls were 95/98….once I moved to 2000 and XP, it became less of an issue. It was still an issue…because in my process of learning about computers, I’d often change this, download that, try doing other stuff….and it’d often have dire consequences, always resulting in a reformat/reinstall. I’m pretty good now, it rarely happens…I’m also prepared. Like Batman. All my files on are on other partitions/external drives and I do a full backup to DVD(s) every couple years. I have a list for what I need to do in my GMAIL drafts folder. Granted, it needs updating:

Back up

Delete backup copies of Users, Program Files, Program Data

EDIT: Thursday (Sept 9, 2010).
I did my reinstall last night. Formatting and reinstalling Windows is so much faster and less painless than before. The time consuming part is installing all the programs, etc…I think I’m pretty much up to speed.

EDIT: Monday (Sept 13, 2010).
My computer’s back up to speed…well, it’s been up to speed for a while. I just installed Visual Studio 2010 that I got from the UWaterloo MSDN. With that installation, my 60GB System Partition was almost filled up. Yesterday, I did some partitioning…merging, deleting, etc. I couldn’t increase the size of the system partition because other partitions had gotten in the way so what I did was move all my files from the other 2 partitions to my 2TB external, and then did a format/partition deletion. From that point on, I repartitioned the drive back to 3 with revised numbers.

It’s pretty awesome how Windows 7 can partition…no need for Partition Magic. It can’t merge or anything but with my solution, copying files to my external/copying it back, partition merging can be accomplished through other means.

OCD
If you see my partition’d drives, you’ll notice a lot of them are “perfect numbers”. If I can, I try to have the numbers come up to nice numbers, 100.00 GB, 300.00 GB, 50.00 GB. You have to convert them from MB so if I want 100GB, it’s 100×1024 = 102400 MB…I figure out those numbers and dump the rest of the space into another partition. Something about having the number just so. I like things in simple numbers if I can help it.

/my computer is organized so well right now! :D that makes me sleep better at night. it really does.

.NET 3.5 and my “process” in games and learning

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Okay. I came to the realization that studying and learning for me is similar to how I play (console) games. I read (guides) and explore everything extremely slowly and thoroughly so that I only have to do things once. I try to understand things completely, 100%. I hate going back to things. This all leads back to some time in highschool, playing Final Fantasy VII for 56 hours and beating it but realizing I did a sh!tty job – it was my first RPG game! – and wanting to replay it but better and correctly a second time. It’s a lesson I learned that really, affected my whole learning process and how I do things.

The problem is that with a short attention span and the gemini thing, I start projects all the time and never finish. I’m always looking for the new, interesting thing to do. Something challenging. I’ll build the 75% hard part of a website but when it comes to alt tagging the images, titling the links, IE6 browser CSS styling, manual/tedious data entry, etc., I just drop the project and look for something else to do. The projects rarely get finished…but I don’t really care, my interest has moved on.

Now, if I re-pick something up after a while and partially forget things, I go and reread everything from the beginning. I don’t want to go into Part 2 of something without remembering exactly what happened in Part 1.

For Metal Gear Solid, I played it over and over. I got 100%, Bandanna and Stealth Camo. In my prime, I beat it in 2.5 hours.
For Metal Gear Solid 2, I played Snake’s Tanker level on Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, Extreme. I played Raiden’s stuff on Very Easy, Easy, Normal…and then lost interest…
The thing is, because I never 100% completed MGS2, I’ve never played MGS3 or MGS4. I’m missing out on so much…because of how I do things.

For Sky’s Content, I read up to chapter…10 or 12 or something….kind of forgot what happened and then when I wanted to start it again, I reread everything (1-12) so that I would feel comfortable reading the rest (13-16).

For Toy Story 3, I rewatched Toy Story 1 and 2 the weekend before watching it.

I guess it’s part of being a perfectionist….I need my 100% in games or it bothers the crap out of me. I’m so glad I refused to get into Achievements for WoW, knowing it would absolutely destroy me if I went for it. Will Power and Common Sense +1.

For this .NET 3.5 book, I read a few hundred pages. Stopped and started another .NET 3.5 book. Now, I’m going back to the original book…and I started over again because I hadn’t looked at any .NET for around 4 months. And even now, I’m still reading, making notes on this book…until my interest goes to something else but that’s looking doubtful at this point.

I feel like I could do a .NET site and do it well. But I’ve seen code (at work) written by a pro developer…and while I can read and edit it, I can’t create what he did from scratch. So I don’t feel like I’m good enough. So I don’t want to start developing anything. I mean, why develop something as I’m learning, only to have to go back and fix it. Now, I understand that development is a growing process…
I will never reach a point where I will know EVERYTHING and feel I have nothing to learn. I should be developing now in .NET for experience…but right now, I still feel like I’ve got much to learn so the above applies. While I can do regular .NET, controls, database stuff, LINQ to SQL and LINQ to XML….I still don’t feel like it’s enough. I’ve seen good code and I’m not at that level yet. So I want to get good enough so that I’m close to that level before I start developing…does this make sense?

Once I finish reading this book, I’ll start my other (harder) book and actually start developing my EPIC SITE. Reading and studying 1 entire book should provide enough skill that I can feel comfortable enough with my skill.

Anyways…that’s how my .NET is going. I’m really understanding things really well a second time around. This really reminds me of how school was. Not really understanding stuff…and then before exams, reviewing things and everything made sense….and then I’d go into an exam and choke >_< Procrastination was always my Achilles Heel…well, I felt that it went along with choking and being unprepared for stuff..but that’s a whole other story. /back to reading textbooks on vacation days. I haven’t left the condo in 48 hours. I haven’t even opened a window. Probably not a healthy thing….

Jack of all trades, master of none, though ofttimes better than master of one

Friday, June 25th, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Some people are good at a select few things. Some people specialize in 1 thing. And me…I’m a jack of all trades type person. Sorta. I’m a jack of all trades…within my area of a few things. Does that make sense?

I would say that the area I specialize in is geekdom. I like computers, electronics, gadgets, math, web design, web development, console gaming, pc gaming, comics, anime, manga, cartoons (that’s all I can think of right now).

However, in all of these areas…I’m not particularly awesome or intensely interested at any one thing. I don’t buy a lot of one thing. My interest is spread out (somewhat) evenly on all aspects.

In World of Warcraft, I had 10 80s. 1 character at level 80 of each class so I could experience every class. Some were played more and more geared than others but the idea was to play it all and then choose which one to focus on (which I never did, I liked playing all). On a more precise note….Druid was also my main for most of WoW. A druid itself is a jack of all trades, able to tank, dps and heal. A hybrid class for WoW.

In Web Development, I’ve used Notepad, EditPlus 2, Dreamweaver and Visual Studio. I know HTML, CSS, Javascript extremely well. I know some Ruby on Rails, jQuery. I know ASP Classic VB, PHP, SQL very well. I’m currently learning ASP.NET 3.5/4 C#, jQuery, HTML5….basically, I’m touching upon everything. But I don’t focus on any single thing.

In Web Design and Adobe, I would say I know my Photoshop best but I’m also familiar with Illustrator, Flash, Premiere, Soundbooth. I’ve used all of them a bit, Photoshop the most. I’m not an expert with any single program but I’ve used them all to do a number of things.

In Anime/Manga, I’ve watched my share but I’m in no way an anime fanatic. I have a number of toys/manga/dvds but that’s only 1/2 of my toys/manga/dvds. The other 1/2 is…

Comics/Cartoons. I’ve also watched and owned my share of comics/cartoons but that’s not my only interest.

I like to tinker and take apart electronics. My computer died so many times when I was young because I’d fiddle with it…reformat this, defrag that, regedit this, install virus by accident that. At this point, I know my way around a PC quite well…and next, I want a MacBook or laptop to learn Mac OS and Linux a bit.

I play various consoles, NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, PS3 but I’ve stayed away from Sega and XBox and a couple of Nintendo generation consoles. I PC game DOTA, LOL, WoW, Counter Strike Source, Plants VS Zombies…but I’m not particularly awesome at any of them. I play side scrolling, puzzle, fps, rts games…but I’m not awesome at any one of them (probably best at side scrolling and puzzle games).

Basically, I’m all over the place…and I like that. It does however, prevent me from getting into too much of a detailed discussion when I talk to hardcore gamers, web development experts or anime fanatics.

I kind of wish I was, say, master .NET developer. I wouldn’t be intimidated when I see jobs like that. But then again, I’d be ignoring all the jobs that say Web Developer or PHP Developer, etc.

Anyways…just writing a post on a topic I’ve had for over 6 months. I’ve been noticing and wanting to write about it lately…so here it is

/back to work…tho I’m about to take a 1 week vacation…to study…so things are quiet today :D

Plants VS Zombies Music Video

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 at 1:57 am

SPOILER: This is the music video at the end of the PLANTS VS ZOMBIES game. I’m totally addicted to it…
Randomly in my condo, I say something in a zombie voice and to the tune…

“I used to play football”
“I have butter on my head”
