Death Note Manga: Review

Sunday, October 17th, 2010 at 2:10 am

****Spoiler Alert****

I’ve never read the manga until this last week…I’ve watched the entire series once or twice, and watched episodes 1-25 at least 6 times, and watched specific episodes (2, 6, 7, 15, 25) countless times. From the anime, I did not really care for Part II very much. I did not care for the characters Near and Mello, figuring them to be similar to L if L were broken into two pieces (each holding some of L’s characteristics). I also did not care for the number of characters…

Part I is mostly Kira, L, Misa, Ryuk, Rem, Japanese Task Force.
Part II is mostly Kira, Near, Mello, Misa, Ryuk, Mikami, Takada, Japanese Task Force and the SPK. By the end, it’s too much! There was a lot to follow and watching the anime, I can say I got lost a bit.

Reading the manga is different though, it discusses all the details more (a lot more), and lets you know what the characters think more often as well as constantly (maybe too often) writing a synopsis of the current situation…which is appreciated but also gets tiring to read.

Anyways, after reading the manga, my appreciation for Part II has become much higher. Near isn’t quite the clone of L that I originally thought he was. While L was interesting, I dare say that I believe Near was more intelligent.

I really did not like that a part of why Kira lost was because Mikami screwed up a bit. I always thought it would be much better if Near (and Mello) outsmarted Kira rather than Kira’s underling, Mikami, making a mistake. I found it interesting that in reading volume 13, Tsugumi Ohba discusses that he did not want Kira’s loss to be a total mistake on his part so he intentionally put in an error from someone like Mikami. I can kind of see why…the readers have all built up Kira in his head that he’s this ultimate mind, thinking and out thinking everyone. He defeated L, he’s the protagonist…I guess? But Kira had his weaknesses, they could have simply exploited them.

Kira’s weaknesses
Childish and hates to lose – for example, killing Lind L. Taylor and getting pwned by L because of that (ep 2).
Careless – L determining Misa as Second Kira. She got caught and various pieces of evidence confirmed it (hair on envelope that tapes were sent)…and Kira just assumed she was safe. Stupid. Don’t let the stupid girl be associated with you!
Overconfident in his abilities – This was taken from Death Note manga’s vol. 13 (Interview with Tsugumi Ohba). I would prefer that this would be his downfall. He’s defeated L, he’s reigned as semi-god for 5 years before meeting someone equal in intelligence, Near. I would figure he just got cocky and careless…

I guess I’ll go into the other character’s weaknesses, as I see it:

L’s weakness
He was too focused on specific evidence and proof, unable to work with assumptions as well as Near. He was very specific in doing things “the right way”…something which Mello didn’t do.

Near’s weakness
None? He acted on assumptions much more than L…but without Mello, it’s only a 50% chance he would have beaten Kira. At least, that’s what I gathered from Part II. But with Near and Mello working together, they definitely surpassed L.

L and Near were very similar but Mello was the key to assuring victory…

All in all, I found the Near, Mello, and Kira battle a lot more interesting this time around….

Differences between the Manga and the Anime
Kira is less sure of himself at the beginning but soon turns into the Kira I’m used to. The differences are most notably the end…
1. The way Kira dies is different. He’s a bit more pathetic in the manga. Like a child…
2. The aftermath featuring Matsuda, Near, Aizawa, etc….
3. The large number of people who support Kira. Men, women, children, the elderly….holding a candle Light vigil for Kira.

Conclusion
If you liked Death Note, I would definitely recommend getting the manga. While volumes 1-12 focus on the anime, but with more detail, Volume 13 was a real treat. An interview with Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata as well as all these other insights…such as Mikami and Misa’s deathdate. I’m learning so much about the behind the scenes, it’s actually very entertaining. There’s a “cut to open” card that has L’s real name on it. I thought that was interesting, you never know L’s name…but then in the character profiles in volume 13, they show it. I would never cut that thing open anyways. Actually, I didn’t remember Near’s name getting exposed in the anime either but it’s shown in the manga. Maybe it just happened too fast in the anime.

Also, Takeshi Obata is the man! Besides the awesome work from Hikaru no Go, the art of Death Note really focuses on mood and lighting and is far less child-like (than Hikaru no Go). Volume 13 tells how much influence Obata had with the designs of L, Light, Near, etc. And did you notice Near is always wearing all white? The panels with him look like a paint-by-numbers thing where he’s left out. It’s actually pretty interesting when I noticed. Also, the way L holds a cellphone and papers is his work too but L’s mannerisms is a combination of both I believe. I really enjoyed his interviews, I found them much more interesting than Tsugumi Ohba who either seemed a bit aloof during his interview, being a genius but hiding it….or really didn’t plan Death Note all that well and sort of just…worked itself out in the end O_O. That’s the impression I got from the mastermind behind Death Note. He didn’t really know what he was doing…like, he was intelligent but didn’t really plan things ahead. He just took it week by week and it all worked itself out. I was a bit shocked by that…

/off to read a non graphic novel…with lots of words and no pictures (except y’know, my imagination…)

An early Christmas and an old memory…

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010 at 10:09 pm

I’m an online shopaholic. Well…sorta. Once a month or so, I go through phase of wanting to buy stuff. I’m a very materialistic person…

Materialistic describes a person who is markedly more concerned with material things (such as money and possessions) rather than spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values; an adherent of materialism. – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materialistic

Ouch. I’d like to say I’m also spiritual and intellectual as well….the cultural thing’s got me tho. I rarely care about that stuff. That definition of materialistic hurts.

Anyways, I’ve prepurchased quite a few things…while this month is slim, there’s quite a lot of stuff coming in November that I’m excited about.

DC Unlimited World of Warcraft: Series 6: forsaken Queen: Sylvanas Windrunner
Delivery Date: October 4 – October 13
Sylvanas

Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition Blu-ray
Release Date: October 5
Beauty and the Beast

November 9

Gran Turismo 5 Collector’s Edition Gran Turismo 5 Collector’s Edition
November 16 – November 29
GT5

Batman Beyond: The Complete Series (Limited Edition)
December 6 – December 16
batman beyond

There are so many things to look forward to!
DCUOnline should be fun, GT5 will be nice, I need a game I can pick up and play quickly, not something long and addicting (like my FF13 Collector’s Edition)….again, I’m hoping I really don’t get addicted to the DCUOnline game. Stop me if it becomes noticeable! I’ve been looking forward to the Sylvanas toy ever since I saw it. It looks FREAKING AWESOME.

I think what I’m most excited about is…Back to the Future Blu Ray. I adore that movie, I’ve watched it so many times and I love so many aspects about it. The DeLorean of course but I think this might be the definitive movie that got me into sci-fi, time travel, time paradoxes, maybe even cars.

Man, thinking about this movie…I just totally resurfaced a super old memory.

magic couch

Okay, I doodled this really quick. The top left is a picture of a couch/chair…and to the right, what would happen if you took the cushion part out. You could rest the cushion on the back of the chair to create a kind of…well, it is what it is. So anyways, it was a regular chair….but when I was younger, I would take the cushion out…sit inside that chair part, and pretend I was driving a DeLorean. I’m young enough here that I’m fitting inside that small area, with my feet close to straight. So probably…I dunno, 4 or 6 or I dunno. The bottom image I drew was my “Time Circuits”, attached to the inner part of the couch, infront of me if I were sitting in the chair. A rectangular paper with 8 equal size slits. Between 2, I would put a stripe of paper with numbers on it…so I could move the strips around to get the destination year. I would set a time, go there, and imagine the world of that year (run around a bit), and then jump back in the machine. This is totally true, you can’t make stuff like this up :P It’s too embarrassing!

I remember specifically traveling to the prehistoric era frequently. At the time, dinosaurs had also been a huge interest of mine. So I would travel to that era, see a dinosaur attacking and jump back in the machine and GTFOutta there. I also had my (nerf / cap) guns to protect myself. And my force fields. You gotta have those…as long as there’s enough energy that it doesn’t run out, or you’re screwed.

I really have/had an active imagination and I was always strong with arts and crafts…doing stuff like this. I created this awesome Cyclops visor as well out of gold foil paper and red/blue or red/green 3-d glasses I’d accumulated. I would take the red out of the glasses and put it in the visor…it looked awesome…and it was like seeing the world the way Cyclops would see it (all tinted red)…I know that was Grade 6 (when I made the visor). I was so kool back then </sarcasm>

Ah, the couch memory was quite a fun surprise writing this post. How completely insane my parents must have thought I was. I was always in my own little world…my imagination was something great back then. It’s still with me but it’s more practical, realistic. Back then, I was totally out there…unhindered by the weight of responsibility and society, purely imaginative, original, and border-lining the edge of reality that would be impossible to do now.

Brains and Frames! and more…

Thursday, September 30th, 2010 at 12:40 am

Plants VS Zombies

Z purchased a collector’s/limited edition PvZ game because it came with this ultra kool toy. He stands at 3 inches. Very awesome. I wish it were mine. Someday soon, it will be *mischievous grin*

Frames

Last Friday, I saw a promotion for clearlycontacts.ca (some glasses place?). The promotion was that you can get “Free” glasses, limited to 3 days or 5000 vouchers. The promotion was actually a reduction of $38.00 from the cost, they also modified some of their prices so that glasses were exactly $38.00, effectively making the glasses “free” if you bought glasses $38.00 or cheaper.

While it would be too expensive to get glasses with my almost legally blind prescription, I thought it would be a good opportunity to get frames. See, because of my terribad eye sight, I don’t like to wear my glasses in public too often (also, they distort my vision on the sides and I get disoriented). But while they look okay, the lens really distort what’s being seen through them. I’m a bit too vain to walk around like that….vain or self conscious, either works :P I also don’t really like getting pictures taken with my glasses….however, I do like the look glasses have on me. I had glasses throughout grades 4 (or 6) to 10, getting contacts in grade 10. I’m very used to seeing myself in the mirror with them, probably seeing myself with glasses more often than without (as I would wear them most of the weekend, rarely putting my contacts on, unless I were to go out). So anyways…I basically purchased these 38.00 glasses, sans prescription….so that I could wear my contacts but still wear prescriptionless frames. Yes, I’m one of THOSE people. Well, I wasn’t until this promotion in which I thought I’d entertain the idea. The glasses cost $12 to ship…so it was getting new frames/glasses for $12. Not bad.

Frames

Anyways, I feel I can finally take a picture with my glasses on….though this one’s not great. Also, the hair, despite looking pretty nice, is a result of a 3 hour nap…so it’s flat on the other side and also why you’re not seeing the top.

Death Note

Got my Death Note manga yesterday. I realize that with my additional Scott Pilgrim and Street Fighter graphic novels from FanExpo, I have no room on my shelf for this. I found out yesterday that the artist of Death Note…is actually the same artist from another favorite manga of mine, Hikaru no Go! What a pleasant surprise. I was so glad to open this Death Note manga (I’ve never read the manga before, despite watching the anime a couple of times) and notice it wasn’t terrible. That’s Shonen Jump for you. Doing manga right. Very glad Prince of Tennis, Naruto, Bleach even, Death Note are all SJ. Despite Initial D fan translated manga being a favorite of mine, Tokyo Pop royally destroyed the translation to the point that it’s unreadable for me. It makes me cringe. Of all the anime/mangas to butcher, Tokyo Pop really screwed the american audience with Initial D. It could have/would have been bigger than Naruto (well, maybe not…).

Anyways…while SJ does an admirable job translating, I’m afraid I’ve watched the anime too many times and the translation isn’t quite the same. The manga also changed my view of Light quite a bit, he’s less sure of himself and what he’s doing in the manga, at least from the first 1/2 of the volume I’ve read. Disappointing. My image of him, shattered.
In the anime, at the end of episode 2, which is up there on my favorite moments…where L determines Kira can kill w/o touching, determines he’s in Kanto, Japan, etc…til the end of the episode where they both declare they are “Justice”, that’s one of my favorite moments. Two intelligent people, both believing what they’re doing is right. LOVE IT.
And then I read the manga and then both declare that they are…wait for it….RIGHTEOUS. “I’m RIGHTEOUS!”?!?!! W.T.F. that sounds terrible. I’ll read the rest but I may not like it! *pout*

Dark Angel

I’ve been a big fan of the Dark Angel series. I watched it on Fox and totally fell in love with Jessica Alba (this is where Z throws a bag of bricks at my face). Okay, I thought Jessica Alba’s CHARACTER here was awesome. I was a fan of the series, purchasing the DVDs and rewatching episodes quite a bit. Anyways, it ended abruptly and poorly after 2 seasons. I never knew there was more….despite wanting to know the rest of the story. I found out just a few weeks ago that there were some novels written to close everything. So despite not being one to read often, I did purchase these books and do intend to blow through them quickly. They’re small and they look child-like so my tenth grade level reading should suffice.

Also, look at Chandler photo-bombing that picture! Kawaii!

My Saturday is average.

Saturday, September 18th, 2010 at 8:53 pm

I slept last night at around 11pm….It was weird, I came home from a bar and left, my skin very warm and with a headache. Except this time I didn’t drink. -_-; It’s unexplainable! Maybe it’s the bar atmosphere O_O

So last night, I thought it’d be funny if I took some mutual funds papers to bed and fall asleep while reading them. So that when Z found me, she’d think it were funny that I couldn’t stay awake reading it. For some reason, I thought this would be funny…I don’t know why. I was drunk (actually, no I wasn’t…). Anyways, I fell asleep, as planned…and then kept sleeping…until 2pm today. Let me tell you, it was an awesome sleep :D I had at least 4 separate dreams…one was a Futurama episode o_o.

Went out to some dim sum restaurant that Z wanted to go to…had some very good eats. Then walked around Eaton Centre a bit. I got a $30 tripod at Best Buy for a camera that I’m currently borrowing. The lack of a steady hand and a good camera & macro lens go together pretty poorly.

EDIT: Here’s a pic of my new “studio”. Looks good with a tripod…also, taking pictures on the couch didn’t seem to work….too low…my back couldn’t take it.

Photo Studio

EDIT: I also got some Mario mints at Best Buy:

Mario Mints

I went to the Disney Store and pre-ordered a Blu Ray Beauty and the Beast. Got this pretty lithograph for pre-ordering.

Beauty and the Beast Litho
note: this is a picture of MY lithograph, not a picture off the internet…

We also got 2 stuffed animals, a Hamm and a Doug. Zena and I really liked the Hamm (he was very soft!) and the Doug might prove useful later.

Hamm

Doug

The plan is to get some Disney Blu Rays, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdins, The Lion King, etc. Toy Story 3 Blu Ray available from pre-order in early Oct FYI. I personally cannot wait for the Toy Story Blu ray box set trilogy. I was in line at the Disney store, running through Toy Story 3 in my head, especially the ending, and finding myself zoning out into the emotional aspect of it. Hard to describe. Toy Story 3 really was one of the best movies I’ve seen all year, if not the best. I can’t wait to rewatch an HQ version of it.

Zena also purchased Starcraft II for herself. I pray that I don’t start it…

After that, I went to Indigo to look for some CSS books. As I started looking at the selection of books, I felt a big overwhelmed at the number of different books and different topics. HTML5 books, ASP.NET C# 4.0 books…jQuery. I felt uneasy and wanted to go home…to do work. But then I started blogging… :S

You know, I just realized that when I opened and removed the tripod from the box, I completely discarded the instructions. When I buy a Transformer, I’d never look at the instructions on how to transform it. “Instructions are for little girls” I would say. Except I don’t use “little girls”, I say something slightly more vulgar. But aren’t simple instructions the basis of learning fundamentals? Maybe I’m not the type that can instinctively learns from fundamentals, I’m the type and dives in head first and then drowns? or more accurately, dives in head first, learns how to swim enough to get by, but probably not make any records.

I leave you with a Flash plushie I got a couple of months ago. He sports a jagged lightning belt meaning he’s Barry Allen, not Wally West (boourns). He’s still cute though.

Overall Impression:
Terrible, poorly organized convention. Lots of backlash this year, I hope they fix these issues next year regarding the number of people. I got 15/32 items on my wish list which is pretty awesome. I spent well over $1200 making this the most expensive 3 days of my life, probably. I “saved” about $325 but I can’t really call it “saving” if I don’t really NEED ANY of this stuff. It’s still $1200 in the hole. I think the 3 day pass was well worth it, being able to come and go as I please, going home to rest/drop off loot. My apologies, my post discusses the amount of people more than the con itself. I didn’t take pictures, I didn’t see famous people, I didn’t participate in any tournaments, events, or panels. I go to the con solely for the dealer room…and the happiness/fun of my purchases cannot be expressed in a mere blog post.        …It would take a few blog posts. And a few galleries.

Purchased Items Day 3 section added Sept 1, 11:30PM

Day 1

Friday, August 27 – 3:30 pm

I’m at the pink dot at 3:30pm. Z and I got to the end of the line around 5:10pm…about an hour and a half after we started to line up. This is the pre-paid line, the line where people pay in advance. I would assume it would be smaller than the non-prepaid line as it requires planning ahead and most people don’t do that. However, if you know you’re going, like every year, then you fall in this group. Anyways, not sure how far the other line went. I would guess…pretty far.

The line, looking South, from the North East corner of the line

Nothing too notable about day 1. I’m more about the dealer room person than the other rooms/events/actors.
Purchased $325 worth of stuff…I thought that was a lot of money. Until the next day…… :S
Saw Helo (Tahmoh Penikett). Was a bit excited to see him, Helo was one of my favourite BSG characters.

Left around 8pm. The pre-paid line, at 8pm still looked like his:

I was shocked at how many people were/are going this year.

Got home at 8:30. My feet were dying…and I’d only been up and about for 4.5 hours. Pathetic! But I’m not that young anymore…

Day 2

Saturday, August 28 – 11:00 am

I couldn’t believe that the line was still this big at 11am. Not sure if this was the prepaid line or what…because I got a deluxe pass, I walked right in. It was sweet bypassing the line of 5 million.

I thought yesterday was really bad in terms of people (the number of people compared to the space). Today was SO MUCH WORSE. Like, I went this year but I don’t know if I can do this again, next year. I don’t like all these people, especially when you’re carrying around giant bags with toys you don’t want to damage. It just…wasn’t fun when it gets this busy. I think the number of people in the building was over persons capacity because the fire marshal came around 2pm and said they weren’t allowing anyone into the building (deluxe pass, vip pass, anything). People could only leave. This sucked because even people with passes already couldn’t get in. I was fortunate, I was just leaving…when…(and I think this is the most fun thing for me this weekend):

The DeLorean made my day :D Saw it right when I was leaving, at around 3pm.

Another 4.5 hours on my feet. Maybe that’s my limit.

Day 3

Sunday, August 29 – 2:15 pm

I was up late the night before reading comics….got to the con a little late today but it’s okay. Much to my dismay, it was still pretty busy. I hit up every row one last time, purchased some Udon Street Fighter TPBs and some more chibi-prints and 8.5×11 prints from Yanimator. I talked to him a bit, asked him if he had a website (to which he replied “yes…but nothing updated”, which pretty much means no. I mean, I think his art is great, I bought 8 prints from him this con which totaled $65…I just wish I could see more of his recent stuff whenever I wanted. My allergies have been particularly bad these last few days, the con atmosphere doesn’t help much. All these big, sweaty people…*shudder*. I walked behind Cavil (BSG) and his granddaughter for like, 2 minutes…that was pretty awesome. He’s about my height…on TV, he looks taller :P I left around 4, I had seen enough…maybe I’ll go next year….maybe. I got so much stuff this year…

Purchased Items

I’ll let this image do the talking:

Day 3: More prints

The top 8, from Yanimator, clockwise from top left:

Ino Yamanaka (Naruto), Naruto and Sakura (Naruto), Tifa Lockheart (Final Fantasy VII), (the) Little Mermaid, Harlequin (Batman), Uchiha Itachi (Naruto), Lightning/Raitoningu (Final Fantasy XIII), Unknown (please let me know if you know who this is).

BTW, do NOT GOOGLE IMAGE Harlequin EVER. It’s like 4chan all over again. WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN CANNOT BE UNSEEN. /cry

The bottom pics, clockwise from top left:

Haruno Sakura (Naruto), Uchiha Sasuke (Naruto), Rock Lee (Naruto), Kirby stealing hats (Smash Bros.), Yagami Light (Death Note), L (Death Note), Ryuk (Death Note), Samus (Metroid), Toothless (How to train your dragon), Freakazoid! (Freakazoid! Runs around in underwear! Freakazoid! Freakazoid!), Cybersix (Cybersix), Bob (ReBoot), “I think I heard something” Soldier (Metal Gear Solid series), Robin (Batman), Superman, Wonder Woman.

The artist was selling 3/5$ which I thought was a pretty ridiculously awesome deal. With the Kirby, I ended up giving her $30. And I ended up giving Yanimator 65…yikes.
